  1. A interesting take...

For all of the wild speculation surrounding the fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, one pilot’s theory about the missing airliner has gone viral for a different reason: it - at least on its face - seems to make a lot of sense.
Aviation blogger Chris Goodfellow has flown commercial aircraft for 20 years, and posted the take on his Google+ page.
  2. Depends on where you bought it, and how recently. No details, awkward.

If you bought it from a name brand retailer in the last 7 days go back. Otherwise, a visit to an HTC repair center is in order.

Sent from my HTC One using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

At least it's working well enough to post. ;)

  3. I don't recall TG operating their own metal to SEA at anytime in the past.

They do have code-share flights, say for example with All Nippon Airways (NH), for NRT-SEA, so these may be sold as part of a TG-issued ticket, with a TG flight number (TG 6086/6087) but the flight is operated by NH (787 Screamliner).

There may be other Star-Alliance code-shares, but I think UA and TG dropped many/most of their code-shares a few years ago.

I think TG has only flown their own metal to LAX (still have one-stop service) and JFK (no longer serviced).

  4. For those who require more of an uncapped broadband solution, you could try one of the wireless PtP solutions like AIS AirNet, 3BB broadband wirelesss, TOT Wi-NET.

We've had good luck with some AIS AirNet installs recently.

I wasn't sure if the OP can accommodate this solution in his condo in Chiang Mai - although the antenna is fairly unobtrusive - or if he can meet the residency requirements for a contract.

  5. True iService app on my phone but the validity didnt change. It still hasnt changed.

    What about #123#?

IME, the iService app takes a long, long, long time to update the expiry, not sure why. I would not rely on that, but rather on #123#.

Not sure what the minimum for 7/11 is, but suspect it may not be as low as 10 baht for obvious reasons.

Maybe use one of those coin top-up machines? They're everywhere. http://www.jsk2545.com/product_mobile_phone_vending-eng.html

  6. I made a call earlier today expecting to have 60 days added to my TrueH validity, but the validity hasnt changed at all and is now due to expire in 4 days.

You completed an out-going call for > ~ 6 sec.? Waited ~ 30 minutes? Checked with #123#? and the validity did not change to 60 days as it has previously? That procedure still works for me. Maybe they've switched you over to this new format? Add 10 baht, see what happens, then maybe add another 10 baht in a day or two to see if it moves out to ~ 120 days?

I've had 12 months validity on my 12Call SIM for ages, possibly since I got it in 2004

This is a result of accumulated, rather than rolling expiry. Have you transitioned to AWN (AIS 2100) yet? Some have reported continuing this method even after the transition, while others have reverted to a 60 day rolling expiry. Obviously any new SIM will have the new, 60 day max. rolling expiry.

  7. The AFS Thailand site confirms the July "arrival" so assume that's geared to accommodate U.S. students - they can't really come in April/May.

    http://www.afsthailand.org/hosting-programs/our-hosting-programs/

It seems like the school/location are really dependent on a match between a local Thai host family and your daughter's stated preferences. But it is safe to say that she will arrive approximately 4 - 6 weeks after the start of the school year. Purely based on statistics it may be safe to say that she will likely end up in the metropolitan Bangkok area.

If the school has an EIP-like program then math, english, science, health, phys ed would have native speakers. The equivalent grade here would be Mathayom 5 (M5). It may be possible to locate M5 syllabus/curriculum/outline detail on-line. Alternatively you could try to determine which schools might have hosted students previously, and contact the EIP director, or past students, to get a feel for the content and potential preparation?

All that said, some of the goals of these programs can be shock/awe, immersion, handling the unexpected, personal growth, dealing with and overcoming challenge so too much advanced preparation may be discouraged? But getting a head-start on learning (alphabet, reading/writing, vocabulary, sounds/tones) Thai might be a good idea?

With young adults' use of social media it wouldn't be too hard to find others who went to Thailand on this particular program.

  8. Do you know if this exchange program is part of the YES program?

If so, do you know if your daughter will attend the Bangkok or Ubon Ratchcathani school?

In Bangkok, this would be the Yuwathoot Suksa School on Kaset/Nawamin. They run on a schedule as described by Scott: Mid-May to Mid-February.

International schools operate on a calendar closer to ones in the U.S. or U.K. So ISB runs mid-August to early-June (many, many holidays and vacation).

As mentioned by SlyAnimal, some Sathit Demonstration Schools might start as late as June 1 (Rangsit, for example) but others might start May 15 (Pathumwan), this is dependent on the university schedule that the school may be affiliated with.

  9. I'm talking about public access points - open and password protected.

Can you give an example? True WiFi? 3BB?

What is the brand of your device? Did your device ever work acceptably for you? I guess you could have some sort of issue with the firmware/baseband? Or an issue with conflicting IP addresses?

When you connect to one of these public APs does it show as "connected" in Settings, Wi-Fi? What does it say under "About device", Status? Are you seeing an IP address? What happens if you re-start the device? Can you get to a browser log-in screen? Do you have a default home page in your browser?

It should be fairly simple and straight-forward, without the need for futzing around with any app.

Maybe it is an issue with your browser, and it's history/cache? Maybe cleanse it? Or use a different browser.

And clean up < delete > all the public APs in your "Settings",

    And re-start the device.

  10. FYI, I checked an award for BKK-CNX, and yes, it is 17,500 miles one-way in Economy and 25,000 miles one-way in Business, but the total taxes and fees are $3.10 (believe this is the 100 baht PSC).

Not sure how the OP ended up with $78.10, but it would appear to me to be a $75 surcharge, perhaps this is the "late booking fee" (AKA: close in booking fee for rez within 21 days, again as a 1K I do not have to pay this fee.)

  11. With TrueMove H, #123# returns the remaining pre-paid balance and the expiration date.

Sending an SMS to 9789 with b in the body returns data usage.

I personally find it simpler and easier to use the iService Android app, you can choose English. Gives you all the information on one screen.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.truelife.mobile.android.trueiservice

DTAC and AIS have similar Android apps.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=th.co.crie.tron2.android

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ais.mimo.eservice

I am pretty sure there are iPhone versions as well.

I get an English language reply to #123#.

  12. It might help if you could provide a lot more detail about these WiFi Access Points? Are these public? Private?

What browser are you using? Maybe try Chrome, which is greatly improved, or Dolphin.

If they are public you may be able to connect in Settings, WiFi, long press on the "Open" network, then open a browser, enter any URL, you'll get re-directed to a log in page.

If they are private, and secured (WEP/WPA), then simply long-press on the desired AP and configure it by entering the password, and "Connect".

< You can jot down the network name and password, for private networks, by ticking "Show password". > For the first step I might delete all Saved Wi-Fi Access Points, and turn off the device, re-start the device. Then start to re-build your available private and public APs.

  13. UA/MP announced significant changes to the MP program on Nov. 1, 2013, which became effective on Feb. 1, 2014, resulting in significant increases in redemption rates for many/most awards.

    https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/news/United-Award-Chart-02-01-14.pdf

    http://boardingarea.com/onemileatatime/2013/11/01/united-mileageplus-award-chart-devaluation/

    http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/united-airlines-mileageplus/1517647-changes-mileageplus-award-upgrade-policies-eff-3-feb-2014-a.html

Savvy fliers locked in award travel before the increases took effect. I booked three (3) USA-BKK-USA trips in first or business.

The taxes and fees the OP quotes seem high. I think they include the $50 telephone booking fee, which one may be able to avoid by booking on-line or by having a higher level of status. As a 1K I do not pay any fees to book on the phone, or to redeposit.

UA/MP is one of the few programs which still does not charge YQ (fuel surcharges) on any award ticket. Most other programs charge YQ which can amount to hundreds of dollars. For upgrades, UA does offer same-day Buy-ups, or miles + co-pay, (detailed on the linked charts)

There is some speculation that UA/MP will change the way miles are accrued in the future, tying mileage accrual to fare paid. YMWV.

UA stops flying their own metal to BKK on 29/30 March 2014, so this makes it a bit harder to redeem award travel to/from Thailand, at the Saver level. This decision was part of their attempt to shed some $ 2 B in expenses.

UA has a joint venture (JV) with ANA (NH), which received immunity waivers from the DoJ and the Japanese equivalent. This allows them to fix prices, control inventory and share revenue on trans-Pac flights. This JV has been extended to Thailand even though it may not be legal. Hence NH will operate NRT-BKK-NRT to feed traffic from/to UA. NH upgauged from a 767 to a 777, and adjusted the early AM/late PM times to align with UA flights at NRT. UA/Pan Am operated one or two dailies to BKK for 28 years.

The UA CTO was, as far as I know, a contract office with a few UA management.

All airport employees will be let go.

Flight crew are based in NRT, HNL or the U.S.

You can still book award travel to BKK on *A partners but understand that Saver inventory is very, very tightly controlled, unless you want to fly on ET via ADB with a 22 hour layover. wink.png

  14. Tonight I was able to use it as an Internet hotspot

Note that this application utilizes both the mobile data and WiFi interfaces, as well as using a lot of steam as a router.

You can go into Settings, Battery to get a feel for which apps are utilizing your battery, including WiFi. If you see "Cell stand-by" at more than say 5% then there may be an issue bouncing between serving base-stations.

  15. Have you excluded WiFi usage? Based on that spike early in this cycle I'd guess not, so that is a combination of WiFi and 3G. You're probably still below 2 GB of 3G if I had to guesstimate.

Go in to the Data usage sub-menu and un-tick "Show WiFi usage".

Did you get a reply from *121*1*9#?

Is that Data usage menu your only point of reference?

You could check on eServices or use the Android app.

  16. You could look into hotels and home-stay options?

FWIW, you won't be the only foreigner around.

Phrae is a large province, assuming you are not staying in Phrae city, do you know which district/sub-district your in-laws call home?

Phrae is a beautiful province, although the forest burning now is quite bad.

I'd recommend a visit to Wat Phra Tot Cho Hae; it is both a Royal Temple, and a birth/zodiac temple (Tiger).

There are also a couple of colonial houses/museums in Phrae city which are interesting.

Have some Khao Soi at Khaosoi Che Lek - 35 Nam Kue Road Nai Wiang Subdistrict Mueang Prae District, Phrae, Thailand

It will be unbearably hot but it should be fun.

  17. Banners with statements about "anti-corruption" and "stop violence" have been erected at the Public Health Ministry and at state hospitals by the Medical Workers Community Network.

Who, or what, is the Medical Workers Community Network? Do they have any political affiliations?

Why the sudden urge to stop violence, or corruption? Surely these have been issues for 50 years, so wouldn't they have been working tirelessly to address these issues?

Are there any rules about erecting banners or signs on government property? At hospitals?

What do these banners say, exactly?

Why are hospitals used to showcase these banners? I'm all for free speech but maybe they should just pay for billboards?

Are political/election billboards allowed at government facilities?
