  1. For those transitioning from TrueMove to TrueMove H are your phones 3G/2100 MHz compatible? Or 3G/850 MHz compatible? Or are you simply "roaming" back on the legacy GSM1800 MHz network?

    Are you using data?

What promotion/plan do you have, re: cost per minute/SMS?

It seems like the NBTC has extended the TrueMove GSM1800 MHz concession for an additional year, until 15 Sep. 2014, so it's not exactly clear why they are migrating customers now? I guess if your phone is not 3G-850 or 2100 MHz compatible then you would, in theory, lose service on 15 Sep 2014, but until then you are roaming on the "old" GSM1800 network? Very strange.

First telecom concession expiry under new licensing regime occurs tomorrow

The expiration of TrueMove's and Digital Phone Co's concessions tomorrow marks the release of the first two slots of the precious 1,800-megahertz spectrum from a state concession system to be utilised under the new licensing regime.
The 1,800MHz spectrum can be used to provide fourth-generation wireless broadband service. However, telecom operators eager to use this spectrum will have to wait at least a year. The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission agreed last month to permit TrueMove, DPC and their concession owner CAT Telecom to continue serving the companies' combined 17 million subscribers for one more year after the concessions end.
The NBTC has dismissed scholars' criticism that this amounts to an extension of the concession contracts, insisting it is merely a measure to prevent service disruption to consumers. It has also denied that it has moved too slowly in preparing for the expiry of the TrueMove and DPC concessions.

    http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/First-telecom-concession-expiry-under-new-licensin-30214803.html

    TrueMove 2G given one-year extension
Thailand’s regulator has passed the anticipated temporary consumer protection notification, giving TrueMove and DPC a further 12 months to operate their 1800-MHz concessions which end on 15 September 2013. The notification will come into force on 25 August.
TrueMove has an estimated 17 million customers still on its 2G network, while AIS subsidiary DPC has less than 100,000.
Under the new arrangement, all profit after expenses will be returned to the exchequer, not just the 30% revenue share.* A five-member audit committee will be set up to look into the finances with representatives from the ministry of finance, office of the attorney-general, one accountant, one economist and one representative from the NBTC.
    * this explains the current transition. ;)
  2. No failure on Obama's role in this.

Well, one could point out that it was Obama who basically got himself all tripped up beginning back on August 20, 2102:

Q: "Mr. President, could you update us on your latest thinking of where you think things are in Syria, and in particular, whether you envision using U.S. military, if simply for nothing else, the safekeeping of the chemical weapons, and if you're confident that the chemical weapons are safe?"

A: "... I have, at this point, not ordered military engagement in the situation. But the point that you made about chemical and biological weapons is critical. That’s an issue that doesn’t just concern Syria; it concerns our close allies in the region, including Israel. It concerns us. We cannot have a situation where chemical or biological weapons are falling into the hands of the wrong people.
We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus. That would change my equation. ..."
Clearly he was more concerned about these weapons falling into rebel hands. And since then he has been playing it a bit fast and loose with the "truth". I still haven't seen a single shred of evidence to back up Kerry's claims that Sarin gas was used.
Luckily, another almost Mr. Magoo-like statement by John Kerry, initially sloughed off as a rhetorical question/answer by the State Department, which "...sought to lessen the potential impact of Kerry's comments by calling them a "rhetorical" response to a hypothetical question and not "a proposal.", saved the day.
Whatever accidental diplomacy practiced by Kerry and Obama - I voted for both of these gentleman more times than I care to admit - ended up with a win-win solution, so Obama and Kerry can take all the credit they want. Firing Tomahawk missiles into Syria would have been a failure.
  3. Two or three weeks ago, there was a similar story - Thonburi? - about a Thai passenger having that happen. She went to the police, they "investigated" but I don't remember any followup.

Seems as if followups are always few and far between.

This driver, who preyed on several Thai people going to the airport, was arrested. I can't find the story, but my vague recollection was that he either pretended to have a problem and require a push to jump start the car, or he would stop for CNG - and drive away once the passenger alighted.

  4. U.S., Russia reach agreement on seizure of Syrian chemical weapons arsenal

GENEVA — The United States and Russia agreed Saturday on a plan to bring Syrian chemical weapons under international control, a rare diplomatic victory in a brutal civil war that appears to head off a punitive U.S. military strike on Syria in the near future.
In announcing the deal, Secretary of State John F. Kerry and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, said the agreement would be backed by a U.N. Security Council resolution that could allow for sanctions or other consequences if Syria fails to comply.

  5. By the way having such a tablet with no mobile internet connectivity is... well.... what's the point?

If you already have a smartphone, with a mobile data plan, then it is quite simple, easy and straight-forward to use the Mobile AP feature to create a WiFi hotspot for a WiFi-only tablet for those times when you are outside of WiFI coverage. So you just have one single SIM to manage.

Obviously, if you do not have a smartphone, or otherwise unwilling to avail yourself of this capability then you would be advised to purchase a 3G-compatible version of a tablet.

Seems simple enough? Ah the options we have.

  6. It looks like both the Thai and English language pages almost, nearly align now? (The FuP speed still shows as 64 Kbps on the English page for the ** denoted plans and 128 Kbps on the Thai-page, but most Thai forums suggest that the new default FuP speed is 128 Kbps, and the activation codes are different, perhaps in an effort to track origin/customer?)

I think DTAC/Happy launched new plans/promotions during the first week of this month, changed the Thai pages first, then changed the English-language pages a few days later. It's not clear to me that this was some sort of deliberate scam meant to suck you dry, but every foreigner here has a different definition of that word, and seems to feel slighted at even the most imperceptible actions.

I think you can always use the Thai-page activation code if there is a preferential difference. And if you have an old/existing plan simply cancel it a few days before it is set to automatically renew, then re-subscribe to the new plan.

  7. ^ Agreed. Once you have HD it's really hard to suffer through anything less. These folks who rave about watching some stuttering, postage-stamp sized stream in ?D are pretty amusing.

For those of us from the U.S. we've got skads of NFL, college football, baseball in HD. Heaven. Lot's of good footy, from other countries. F1, Rally, Moto GP in HD is a joy.

Until ~ January 13, 2014 I can do without tennis in HD. ;)

  8. The audio problems with TrueVisions: Thai over English, and the drop-outs seem resolved on my system.

We are still having a lot of problems with the new CTH cable box/system, and most neighbors seem to have the same issues. Audio drops out for a few seconds, or have decent audio but a black screen (no video), or channels are severely pixelated. Not all channels are affected, and CTH are aware of the problems.

  9. I only suggested that True Online's focus for this FTTH offer was on the residential market based on their Financial Analysts' presentation:

Offered FTTH services in the high-end residential projects to maintain leadership position

Most people seem to think this service is priced well above other options which might be better suited for micro-businesses. So it remains unclear how much True will target them, scattered across disparate locations, with this solution, especially given their price-sensitivity. I'm not even sure if True Online has an SME-focused sales force, or even if they are allowed to sell into SMEs? I think their fixed-line voice concession may preclude non-consumer business, but I am less than familiar with the terms of that particular concession.

Maybe we have different definitions of SMEs? I don't consider a family business in a shophouse to a be a Small Enterprise; I think close to 80% of the SMEs in Thailand are related to agriculture.

Most service providers tend to refer to this as FTTx, where the x can represent the curb or the home. 3BB calls their service FTTx, CAT calls theirs On-Net (a reference to optical networking) and TOT calls theirs Fiber 2U. It seems like all of these are focused on residential applications?

Business focused internet services tend to offer options like fixed IP addresses, enhanced service and support and QoS levels. TOT and CAT, along with many third-party SI/NI shops tend to address these markets.

  10. TLC channel after the upgrade is gone.

TLC remains on my service, now on Ch. 23.

We have the new CTH cable service in a family home in Prawet - it seems pretty good, but the last few days both the audio and video have been dropping out for extended periods across many/most channels.

  11. I'm getting both Thai and English audio on ASN now. Only during the game, not during the commercials.

I switched to TS HD, Ch. 115, but it seems like ASN HD (Ch.157) is OK now.

Audio on CNN HD (Ch. 164) seems fine?

  12. The only reference to FTTH I can find in any recent True Corp. Analyst's presentations is this single bullet:

Offered FTTH services in the high-end residential projects to maintain leadership position
So it's not clear how much effort, or how broadly deployed these FTTH services are? The focus seems to be on growing the legacy DSL and DOCSIS "new adds". True Online had 1.680 millin broadband customers at the end of Q2/2013.
My best guess is that on select new, high-profile/high-density, luxury properties they are deploying FTTH, with hopes of delivering bundled triple-play services with internet, voice (fixed-line, with tie-ins to mobile) and video (TV). These folks are probably less price-sensitive than most of us here, and are wiling to pay a bit more for the latest/best? This is a bit like their foray into VDSL.
I doubt many here could even get FTTH, from True Online, even if you wanted it.
  13. I have to say that I am pretty happy with TrueVisions. Having ASN transition to HD today is perfect timing for tomorrow morning's football game. ;) And having 29 HD channels is a plus. Definitely getting better for me, but then I only pay 800 baht/month all in for a 4-box share of Platinum HD.

  14. The challenge is that there will be too many permutations, tens of thousands, to accurately collate, track and provide useful to anyone.

Most booking engines offer a glimpse at the fare-rules, so maybe easiest/best to pop in a dummy booking, then look at the fare rules?
Generally speaking, as you move up the fare bucket chain, from least expensive/most restrictive (Q/V/W/S/K/L/T on some airlines) to most expensive/least restrictive (Y/B/M/H) change fees may approach zero, from a high of $400 USD.

  15. Can you share any details? Phone make/model? If Android what version and base band? How recently? For brief experimental purposes: If you turn off mobile data does the battery last longer? If you switch to 2G only does the battery last longer?

If nothing has changed, and you are 100% sure of that then maybe your phone does not handle 2100 MHz as well as it could or should: firmware, baseband issue.

I used AIS/2100 MHz for a few days and did not notice any battery issues; I provided an AIS/2100 MHz SIM to a colleague and he did not report any battery issues during his six day visit.

Without a lot more details I might suspect other problems, but only you know the complete story so maybe best for you to search for others with similar problems? Google your phone's make and model, then add 3G or 2100 MHz, etc. XDA Forums is a decent place to look for simialr issues, and potential solutions.

  16. The big danger was that if Syria got by with it

Well, for most, it still remains to be proven that chemical weapons were used, and if they were, who used them.

My sense is that Syria probably have little or no viable weapons of mass destruction, chemical or otherwise, and both Russia and Syria know this, so just as with Iraq we will quickly find out the truth - "Sorry Sir, no WMDs".

  17. New Snowden Documents Show NSA Deemed Google Networks a "Target"

Aside from targeting Petrobras, Fantastico revealed that in a May 2012 presentation reportedly used by the agency to train new recruits how to infiltrate private computer networks, Google is listed as a target. So are the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SWIFT, a financial cooperative that connects thousands of banks and is supposed to help securely facilitate banking transactions made between more than 200 countries. Other documents show that the NSAs so-called STORMBREW programwhich involves sifting Internet traffic directly off of cables as it is flowing pastis being operated with the help of a key corporate partner at about eight key locations across the United States where there is access to international cables, routers, and switches. According to a leaked NSA map, this surveillance appears to be taking place at network junction points in Washington, Florida, Texas, at two places in California, and at three further locations in or around Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania.

  18. Declassified court documents highlight NSA violations in data collection for surveillance

The National Security Agency for almost three years searched a massive database of Americans’ phone call records attempting to identify potential terrorists in violation of court-approved privacy rules, and the problem went unfixed because no one at the agency had a full technical understanding of how its system worked, according to new documents and senior government officials.
Moreover, it was Justice Department officials who discovered the problem and reported it to the court that oversees surveillance programs, the documents show, undermining assertions by the NSA that self-reporting is part of its culture.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/declassified-court-documents-highlight-nsa-violations/2013/09/10/60b5822c-1a4b-11e3-a628-7e6dde8f889d_story.html

NSA violations led judge to consider viability of surveillance program
Declassified documents from 2009 suggest NSA officials gave misleading statements to court and reveal judge placed a siginifcant restriction the bulk records program
A judge on the secret surveillance court was so disturbed by the National Security Agency's repeated violations of privacy restrictions that he questioned the viability of its bulk collection of Americans' phone records, according to newly declassified surveillance documents.
  19. Assuming this diplomatic solution is successful in eliminating Syria's chemical weapons, which seems to be the primary concern of Obama, then Obama has been given an excellent opportunity to save face. He can claim that his "saber-rattling" forced the outcome he wanted.

Without this solution he would have lost any vote to mount an attack, and then would have been left with the option to either proceed with the attack, and come across as a war-monger, or choose to accept the vote of Congress and come across as a weakened leader.

This is quite probably the best possible outcome for Obama. He definitely owes Vlad a nice Christmas present this year. And now with the recently elected President of Iran mentioning some options re: their nuclear program, and a slight easing of U.S. sanctions towards Iran, events are taking a turn towards the positive.

Kerry still looks like a complete doofus however, the b*lls it took to claim Sarin gas was used, and then offer up overly accurate death tolls ( "1,429 killed, including 426 children" shows he has no problem lying.

Syria: John Kerry’s “Big Lie” syndrome. “Political language is designed to make Lies sound truthful and Murder Respectable”

US secretary of state John Kerry has just delivered what may turn out to be his most shameful moment in history. Kerry has been handed the baton of sabre-rattler-in-Chief by a President that has much vested interest in upholding his facade of “reluctant warmonger”. Since President Obama declared his now infamous “red-line” over the use of chemical weapons in Syria; it has invariably been White House underlings and members of the State Department who are given the task of misleading the public – Kerry is not doing a very good job of it.

  20. Obama seeks support for attacking Syria while pursuing diplomacy

President Barack Obama tried Tuesday to sell a military intervention he never wanted to an American public that opposes it, telling the nation that he needed authorization to attack Syria for chemical weapons use as leverage in a newly emerged diplomatic opening from Russia.

Calling the United States "the anchor of global security," Obama offered moral, political and strategic arguments for being ready to launch limited military strikes while trying to negotiate a diplomatic solution.

"Our ideals and principles, as well as our national security, are at stake in Syria, along with our leadership of a world where we seek to ensure that the worst weapons will never be used," Obama said in making the case that the United States must act when dictators such as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "brazenly" violate international treaties intended to protect humanity.
