  1. Guess our experience is different. Every time I go out to the 3rd floor for a taxi, which is very frequently, I see at least five, and as many as ten taxis waiting. Most recently, that was the case this past Thursday night.

Believe you mean to say the fourth floor, AKA: Departures, where taxis sometime linger, after having dropped passengers off at the airport, hoping to pick up passengers leaving the airport. Often there are officials here trying to discourage this activity.

The only egress on level 3 is directly to the parking garage.

I just arrived from my home country I didn't have any 100s aft all. just 2 20s. the rest of my currency was all 500s and 1000s. the money changers where I change currencies at only give 1000 and 500s.

One can pay the toll(s), assuming the tollway is a routing option, with a larger bill, 100/500/1,000, which makes it easy to get change en route.

  2. Fox Sports (109) is SD, Fox Sports Plus (163) is HD. You can use the on-line schedule to search by channel name, date, or by a program name, like "UFC".

It looks like there is some UFC on Fox (78) in SD weekly at 21:15 (local) as well.

These appear to match the schedule info. available on the TV...

  3. It should seem obvious, even to the dimmest of bulbs here, that Messrs. Maslae chose to copy the Starbucks logo and name in an effort to improve their opportunities. In most places this is illegal. If their coffee is so wonderful why not use their own name and a unique logo? (Im not a huge fan of the Thai brown bag coffee. Often the water used is foul smelling, and they use the grounds over, and over, and over.)

Cant blame Central Group for protecting their Starbucks franchise here, and the thousands of jobs it has created.

Arguably Starbucks helped drive the global coffee renaissance, which in turn has led to many, many small, independent growers, roasters and coffee shop owners. Obviously, the north of Thailand has benefited from the coffee growing business.

Starbucks have a short memory they stole there whole idea from Alfred Peet in Berkeley California Mr Peets Coffee shop Walnut and Vine even copied the insides of his store ... turn about is fair play ....

The Starbucks founders routinely and often credit Alfred Peet with the inspiration for them to start Starbucks. Example:

"What made Peet's so strong was that Alfred Peet had so much knowledge about coffee and tea," Jerry Baldwin, one of the founders of Starbucks who is on Peet's board of directors, said Friday. Baldwin said Mr. Peet was an inspiration for Starbucks.

  4. Did you pay the 10%?

If so, you should be fine. 10% seems reasonable?

There have been a gazillion threads re: shipping stuff from the U.S. My vague recollection is that FedEx is to be avoided at all costs.

I've seen rates from 0 (zero) % to 100+% in posts here over the years, which can included VAT, Import Duty (ad valorem), Excise.

  5. Hi yes I have the taxi quote paper how do I complain?

Believe there are many ways to lodge a complaint:
    Call 1584
    Use Android or iPhone app.
    Use on-line form.
There may be more details on the slip of paper you received at the official taxi queue on level 1. I’ve taken a taxi from there hundreds of times and never had an issue re: using the meter.
  6. There are a lot of good, inexpensive, local (Thai) seedbox providers. Simply Google "Thailand Seedbox Colo", or have a sniff around some Thai social/tech forums.

The advantage of a local seedbox is that when you FTP from the seedbox to your PC it is intra-Thailand. And the disadvantage is that torrents may be seeded from outside of Thailand.

Note that many Thai private Torrent trackers are affiliated with Seedbox providers so you can typically get stuff in minutes, I average 48 Mbps (6 MBps) down on my Thai seedbox, and then wire-speed when I FTP.

  7. I guess I'd recommend that you turn mobile data off for now: Settings, Wireless & Networks, More, Mobile networks, un-tick Data enabled.

Without subscribing to some sort of mobile data plan you are paying 1.07 baht/min, so this is eroding your balance.

Next visit AIS and request to port out/port in to their new 2100 MHz subsidiary AWN, and get a new SIM (they can map your existing number to this new SIM).

Then add value and subscribe to a monthly, recurring pre-paid mobile data plan. Maybe try a daily plan to verify coverage, performance and functionality?

This recommendation is based on the assumption that you have AIS/2100 MHz 3G coverage in your primary locations.

  8. TrueMove H 3G Tourist Inter SIMs: http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/3g/sim-truemoveh/prepaid/entry/2258?ln=en

Look to be good on both CAT-TrueMove H/850 and TrueMove H/2100

    DTAC/Happy Tourist SIMs: http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/touristSIM.html

    AIS/One-2-Call Tourist SIM: http://www.ais.co.th/12call/en/sim-Tourist.html

These are not the only options, you could pretty much get any SIM you want, add value, choose a plan/promotion and layer on a mobile data plan.

  9. Are you able to view the modem/DSL line statistics? If so, can you post them?

Assume you have a telephone? Is that working as before? Any unusual noises on that line?

Based on the limited detail provided, especially a neighbor on TOT with no issues and no real issues until recently, my best guesses would be a cabling issue (degradation, inadvertent tampering) between your modem and the TOT POP, or a cross-connect (the result of moves/adds/changes - typically where they break out voice and data) in the POP.

People are mucking about with the cabling every day - I see many TOT street-side cabs which are supposed to be locked, open; and various workmen leaning ladders up against overhead cables and tapping into lines every day.

You could borrow your neighbor's modem and try it on your line - this would eliminate the modem as a potential issue.

  10. I recall my previous True Sim was a year I think on top up ??

That was then, and TrueMove, this is now, and TrueMove H. There is a looming shortage of numbers, and validity (duration) have been shortened and/or tied to usage.

You could ring TrueMove H to inquire about alternatives, leave the SIM with a friend to "maintain", enable international roaming so you can maintain - take a few small denomination top-up cards for example - this assumes you have a signal/roaming partner wherever you end up, My best guess is that these free promo SIMs targeted for tourists may not be the best choice if your plans involve anything other than a single short-time stay?

DTAC/Happy offer a validity buy up scheme: 2 baht/30 days up to 24 baht for 360 days but this has some requirements re: term and usage.

  11. TrueMove-H credit is 6.49 bt, you can use service until 13/11/2013 (word for word)

Assume you understand that 13/11/2013 is thirty-days, November 13, 2013, rather than one day?

My best guess is that your particular SIM rolls 30 days based on usage (outbound call or text), or a top-up.

You could contact TrueMove H to see about changing the promotion, plans, terms. Most TrueMove H SIMs I am familiar with have a 60 day rolling validity, again based on usage.

  12. AS I mentioned in the early days: they will get it right with the City line running every 5 minutes and NO Express line whistling.gif

Not sure this is feasible re: available functioning rolling stock, schedules/durations/dwell times, track/platform configurations? Probably 10 - 15 minutes might be the best/safest achievable target? I am not a railway engineer, nor do I portray one on TV.

  13. For the last 2 months there has been a conscious effort to dissuade people from using the express train.

OK, but you've still been able to purchase a token and travel on the Express Train as you have for the last two years? Is that correct?

The crux of your issue seems focused on your interaction with the staff over the last two months, is that correct?

I have not encountered any issues purchasing a token for the Express Train at Phaya Thai, or at the Airport.

  14. Personally I'd separate the NAS and router/WiFi solutions and purchase separate units.

Re: NAS, I've been looking at some Synology solutions, and these do offer quite a few decent features including stand-alone torrenting (AKA "Download Station").

For a router, the ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-N 600 Router (RT-N56U) seems to get pretty decent reviews. Based on the thread title (..../Modem) I'm guessing the OP has DSL, so could keep the present CPE and use it as a modem, bridged to the new router?

  15. I've seen plug cables being sold (Telephone RJ11 to RJ45) where one end (RJ11) can plug into the wall phone jack and the other end (RJ45) can plug into the router enternet jack

Not sure if we are not being excruciatingly clear but this will NOT work. You need a DSL modem to "plug into the wall phone jack" FIRST, then with that device in Bridge mode you can connect your new ethernet router.

  16. I've just bought a Samsung S4 gt9505 LTE here in the UK and was wondering about whether it will work in Thailand when I come back.

    Hope so? smile.png

    That SGS4 variant should work with TrueMove H's 2100 MHz LTE implementation, as it supports LTE 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600. That SGS4 variant also supports HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 so it will also work on any/all 3G options here as well.

TrueMove H is behind on 3G/2100 MHz deployment owing to a lack of funds, at least until they sell their "Infrastructure Fund" to generate capital. They have publicly claimed 4G/LTE/2100 MHz in Bangkok and near SBIA/BKK, with a plan to have 2,000 base-stations in 13 - 17 provinces by the end of this year (2013).

    http://truemoveh.truecorp.co.th/truemoveh4g#pane04

CAT/TrueMove H already have the most 3G coverage, 11,000 - 14,000 base-stations (CAT has 14,000, TrueMove H can use at least 11,000 of those) in 77 provinces, with 3G/850 MHz, and the fewest customers.

Until such time as the NBTC auctions 1800 MHz spectrum, now July - October, 2014 at the earliest, there will not be a lot of 4G here.

  17. I'm assuming that you are not experiencing any data leak issues: say if your phone is data-capable and you are paying 1.07 baht/min. for the data connection.

Your SIM has a default voice call charge per minute, which might range from 1 to 2 baht /min. so you could have burned through 75 baht in 30 minutes or less, as this calling card does not provide free access.

Again, there are plenty of local calling cards which offer FREE local access and/or have a call-back feature. We do not pay for incoming calls here so call-back is also "free".

As you know more details re: your SIM, promotion/plan, call duration, etc., you are in a better position to determine if something doesn't seem right.
