  1. What he is describing is DSL or ADSL.

I wasn't exactly sure as nearly everyone refers to DSL as DSL, rather than referring to it as a "USA AT&T 'Two Wire'" system. Note that there was/is a DSL-CPE supplier called 2Wire.

FWIW, I worked at Bell Labs, and then Lucent for ~ 5 years, specifically on DSL. After which I went to work with a DSLAM start-up. While BellCore and Bell Labs individuals, along with many other academic types, could lay claim to "inventing and perfecting" DSL, it might actually have been international standards bodies, specifically the ITU, which ultimately led to the wide deployment of DSL?

  2. I always recommend getting new evaluation SIMs, typically these cost ~ 50 baht, and one can subscribe to a daily (49 baht)/weekly (200 baht) plan for evaluation purposes. Once you've identified a provider which meets your requirements: coverage, call quality/completion, services & options, plan options, performance, customer service, web-based account management, etc., then port out/port in to the new service provider. I might even go with a pre-paid plan for a few months, to make sure you are satisfied, before potentially switching over to a post-paid/contract plan.

The MNP Clearinghouse is processing a lot of intra-provider (AIS/900 to AWN/AIS/2100, DTAC to TriNet, TrueMove to RealMove?) port outs/ins so not sure how the process is working for 'traditional' inter-provider ports?

The MNP fee was reduced a few months ago, from 99 baht to 29 baht.

Generally speaking CAT/TrueMove H with 850 MHz 3G - your phone would need to support this frequency - has the best/most coverage and the fewest customers, so they may be the best option. This assumes you need mobile data.

If you are just looking for voice services and/or your phone does not support 3G/850 MHz then AIS/One-2-Call or DTAC/Happy should be fine.

  3. This all seems similar to the USA AT&T 'Two Wire' modem which connects to a regular telephone outlet .... works fine but very specialized ... it is possible to connect a more conventional 'router' to this type of system

Based on the OP's current/old router, Zyzel Model P-660HN-F1, it seems as though he has DSL; standard from TOT, rather than some "USA AT&T 'Two Wire'" system.

He can use the Zyxel unit in Bridge mode as an ADSL modem, and then connect the new Asus router, and then use it as a 4-port ethernet router and/or WiFi AP. The Asus router has a WAN/uplink port, it should be blue, which would be sued to connect to an ethernet port on the Zyxel unit, typically port 1 if a multi-port unit.

Assuming you have the username and password for the Zyxel unit ( browser to: 192.168.1.1; default password is "1234" ) it should be relatively easy to configure.

  4. Yes, for both KAKAO and CHAToN...but when I sent the completed registration, it bounced "NETWORK ERROR, Try again later. Tried multiple times over several days with no success.

To me this sounds as though you did not successfully complete the installation and registration process.

Only showed on my notification screen, a small triangle with an exclamation pt. within, "AIS GSM: RESTRICTED ACCESS C..." Below that:"All Voice Services Are Blocked."

Was this an SMS you received? A USSD message? When did you receive this message, and how is it related to the issues with Kakao and ChatON?

What make/model phone do you have? I assume you've verified that these apps can run on your phone/software version?

  5. You could set the Zyxel unit in Bridge mode, use it as an ADSL modem only, then connect your new router and use it.

This will require that you access the UI/management system on the Zyxel unit. The user's guides for both units will be valuable sources of information.

There have been some good threads on this subject here, and there are a lot of good articles, diagrams and videos available via Google.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=bridge+mode+site%3Bthaivisa.com&oq=bridge+mode+site%3Bthaivisa.com&aqs=chrome..69i57.7491j0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=bridge+mode+site:thaivisa.com

Each interconnection between a bridged modem and router can be challenging and unqiue to configure.

Not sure you needed another router, the Zyxel unit should be fine unless you have specific application requirements which require DD-WRT, like router-based VPN.

  6. Not sure as you've provided no details but am guessing that you have DSL from TOT? If so, your "old" router had a built-in DSL modem, and your "highly rated ASUS router" does not. Again, this is just my best guess.

Can you share any details? About the exact type of service? What is the brand/model of your "old" router? Does it have a different looking RJ-11 (phone jack) port on the back, maybe labeled "phone", or "DSL"?

  7. as an american ur entitled to $92,000 or so before u have to pay livng as an expat.

Believe this is related to the IRS/Federal 1040 rather than any particular state, and it of course only covers the exemption on foreign-earned wages, salary, etc. rather than say investment income, and may not absolve one from the requirement to file a state return.

I know nothing about California, I merely recommended that the OP "look into the ramifications...".

You may be required to prove residency, like with an address and utility bill? They may issue a temporary license, and then mail the official license to your address of record.

still what can they do if they call me up? i'll be back in Thailand by then.

Not sure, maybe best to consult a lawyer. I've heard of some folks missing jury duty, then having a bench/arrest warrant issued, then other issues follow. Assuming you never want to go back, or renew a passport you should be fine.

  8. Can you share any details?

Do you currently have a 3G plan? Do you have a decent 3G connection? Do you encounter these issues when on 3G?

For Kakao Talk, did you receive the 4-digit registration code and complete the installation?

Can you share the exact content of the "... partial AIS warning Saying all voice services are blocked"?

I was able to successfully install/register both Kakao Talk and ChatOn. I have a Google NExus 4 on DTAC.

I suspect you may be encountering some configuration issue; AIS should not care how you consume your data. FWIW, AIS have Kakao Talk on their apps web-page so doubt they're blocking anything. http://www.ais.co.th/iphone/en/appstore/AppDetail.aspx?id=a6c02ae5-c498-4006-ad05-8e039e869c79

  9. I wonder why the OP is stuck in Seattle when this current emgency landing was made in Anchorage ?

    UA 139 diverted to ANC.

UA chartered an AS aircraft to ferry the 144 pax to SEA, maybe the easiest/best/closest spot to hook up with enough metal to NRT? It looks like all but 16 pax went out on UA, NH, DL. Presumably those 16 pax went out on UA metal the following day?

I think UA have seven (7) 787's in service now - another two awaiting delivery and one in FAT.

    Denver – Tokyo Narita (Commenced)

    Houston – Lagos (Commenced)
    Houston – London Heathrow – Starts 20 December 2013
Los Angeles - Tokyo Narita (Commenced)
    Los Angeles – Shanghai (Commenced)
    Some also fly domestic routes.
  10. Kickass Torrents - kickass.to - has pretty much everything.

There are a lot of good, local, Thai-centric torrent sites/trackers, and most seeders are on local seedboxes, so easy to get almost anything, with Thai subs. For movies, DVD ISO's have all the language/subs options.

  11. True corp has the best coverage

    AIS is second place

Unfortunately the OP's phone does not support 850 or 900 MHz 3G, so while I might normally recommend CAT/TrueMove H (850 MHz) first, in this specific case neither TrueMove H or AIS would be the first option.

According to their public statements, TrueMove H has only slowly been deploying 2100 MHz 3G - I think a lot of their focus has been on 2100 MHz LTE, and AIS to is a bit behind in 2100 MHz 3G deployment.

  12. DTAC/Happy have a 2100 MHz 3G network, they may have the widest deployment of that frequency as of today. They have a 199 baht/7 day/ 1 GB mobile data plan.

When out of 2100 MHz range you would fall back to GSM1800 for voice and data.

    http://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/Happy-internet-package.html

    AIS/One-2-Call also have a 2100 MHz 3G network, they have a 249 baht/7 day/1 GB mobile data plan.

    http://www.ais.co.th/3g/th/smartphone-package.aspx?package=Extra-Package#tips

Whaen out of 2100 MHz range you would fall back to their GSM900 network for voice and data.

You can buy a SIM, add value, subscribe to a mobile data plan. You could do this at the airport (Suvarnabhumi/BKK), where DTAC and AIS have shops on level 2/Arrivals just outside Customs, or at any one of a gazillion convenience stores or mobile shops.

Seems like UA chartered an AS aircraft to ferry pas to SEA, for flghts on to NRT on UA, NH, DL.

Some of the ETOPS landing options, were another different component failure to occur, on these (near-) polar routes are sketchy, especially with a flap problem so probably best that they turned around, to land at a more robust airport?

  14. I've migrated several DTAC pre-paid (Happy) and post-paid accounts from ols, standard (mini-) SIMs to new micro-SIMs. Just stop by any DTAC full service shop where they will give you a new SIM, and re-program their systems to map your existing number to the new IMSI SIM. All the times I've done this there has been no charge and it took less than 2 minutes.

  15. Do I need to anything?

    Probably.

Feel free to share any details.

Assume you have money/balance, validity, coverage, have subscribed to a plan, configured your phone, etc. etc.

My best guess, given that you've provided no information, is that you had a mobile data plan sometime in the past but that it has expired. You may need to add value, and re-subscribe to a mobile data plan, again. But this is just a guess.

  16. This is a network-based service rather than a device-based service. So the network must support the blocking of the CPID, if it doesn't, then your device cannot support it. As you can see, AIS/One-2-Call offers this as a fee-based service - either for the month or on a call-by-call basis. I searched the DTAC/Happy and TrueMove H websites quickly and did not see a similar offer.
