  1. Potatoes origanated in Peru in the Andes there is some thing like 70 varites. I think they like the cooler climate as i9n the States the Idaho potatoes are well thought of.

There are many different variates here and a potato lover will shop around and find the one that suits him. There is no shortage it just requires a little work to dig them all out.

  2. Head east on the superhighway frontage road from Chotana intersection. Somewhere along there, before you get to the river, there is a place that rents them & other construction equipment. Roughly, across the super from Tesco. Probably nearer Chotana intersection than the river. Sorry for being vague, but it was about 5 yrs ago we rented the same machine.

  3. Was out cycling east of San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai, yesterday. Saw a pied harrier. Mainly white, with black head, & wing tips.

That is interesting as we saw our first one for the season here just yesterday. Watched him for about ten minutes and he flapped his wings about once. Don't know much about their migration patterns but it sounds like they might take the same disco bus.

Saw a pair this morning in a different location much closer to town near hwy 1317 . Female have white head?

The male Pied Harrier is largely black and white. Juveniles and females are brown, with a white patch across the base of the tail. The one with a pale head is the larger Marsh Harrier (female or young).

Earlier in this thread someone posted a picture of a Black-shouldered Kite. Yesterday, I watched one feeding its young on the nest.... one of those rewarding moments for a birder!

I think the second sighting was black shouldered kite.

  4. At the moment ( 2055 ), I've got the fan on, so perhaps the cold snap is over.

Definitely felt colder to me than last year though, while it lasted. Made getting a more powerful water heater worth while.

I have the air conditioner on inside, it's hot.

You must be in the concrete city. Up here in Mae Taeng, we wore our coats at lunch (11:30 AM) as the breeze was so cool.

    San Sai

Concrete jungle of a housing project?

  5. About 18 months ago here in Chiang Mai (not where you are, Iknow), I bought a set of 235/15 Michelin Latitude Cross for 14,400 fitted, balanced and with wheel rotation at each 10,000km - small local shop.

2 years ago, I paid 4700 baht each for a couple of Latitude Cross AT 265/15. A couple of months ago they were asking 6000 baht each. Big increase over those 2 years. Settled for a couple of Dunlops AT3 @ 5000 each. It's only for the second truck that's used mainly for driving in the mountains & carrying mountain bikes. If it was my main drive, I would've paid the extra for the Michelin.

  6. I totally disagree with the 'think it's because people like to see things fail'.

The main problem with this high speed rail link is the frequently inconclusive, inconsistent, even contradiction in statements by various government ministers and other officials. Even in the last six months we had

    - BKK-CM link ready in/by 2015

    - first link ready by 2018

    - BKK-CM link necessary for poor commuters

    - trace defined (but no details)

    - high speed (but no details)

    - billions and billions of Baht, but no business plan (concentration on people rather than goods even!)

    - etc., etc.

"inconclusive, inconsistent, even contradiction in statements" hits it right on-the-mark ! thumbsup.gif

Note for example the other thread started/running today, in which the OTP (Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning) announces that the four high-speed routes won't be ready before 2020, won't be built by the SRT although largely using their land for the new routes, and doesn't even mention the Chinese high-speed freight-railway plans.

Oh, and quotations for the first sections of all four routes are due this year ! wink.png

It's not being negative, merely being realistic, to suggest that this bunch couldn't run a piss-up in a brewery. drunk.gif

I believe over here "chemical plant" is the correct phrase. When I think of breweries, Theakston at Masham springs to mind.....

  7. I'm surprised no one has brought this up, but, you do have a work permit for said " work boots" wink.png

If not & you get stopped by anyone in uniform, be sure to let them know that they're "recreational boots" laugh.png

  9. Back to original topic - am I the only one who wonders what they did with all the stuff from last year? Or the year before, or the one before? Those are the 3 cold seasons I've been in CM for, and every one of those seasons it's the same story (possibly with different amounts).

    Just sayin'

It was probably low quality. Like most things that are cheap here.

  10. Hey DaamNaam

Did they come yesterday and give you a quote ?? whats the cost

    cheers

Not yet mate. Meant to be today sometime. I hope.rolleyes.gif

    Will let you know though.

Did they come? The world is waiting......

They did, when i wasn't there (at the advice of another TV poster)...

    600 baht a Sqm.

    So my 200 Sqm = 120,000

A touch cheaper than i expected.

Australia = 110 AUD per Sqm

    UK = 50-65 GBP

So will be going ahead with it, later.

Is that building from nothing, ie bare soil?

  11. Tried Findig but no go... sad.png

What they did have are more like fashion work boots smile.png

    Thin leather or leather like?

    Anyway will keep searching

Global House & the likes sell work boots. Might be cr@p, never examined them closely. Tend to be black, not buff as in your picture. Leather or plastic, don't know. Worth a look?

Don't shoot the messenger if they're no good biggrin.png

  12. Been here for nearly 10 years mate and remember this totally stupid pointless law being introduced. I have got a great life thank you but not helped by annoying inconveniences like this that are soooo very unnecessary. Some folk have not got the spare money to buy two cases of beer, I certainly only tend to buy a dozen cans for the week as I am not a big drinker..

So lets get this right Ray.

You have been here nearly ten years.

You refuse to go shopping before 2pm or after 5pm when you can buy any quantity of booze you want.

You refuse to purchase 10 litres at a time, which would allow you to buy between 2 and 5 pm.

So you want Thailand to change its law to accommodate your preferred shopping habits.

IMO you deserve to be annoyed and inconvenienced.

Just you keep buying your weekly dozen cans Ray that will show them clap2.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Jeez mate you are missing the WHOLE POINT. If this law actually achieved some real purpose then fine the inconvenience would be acceptable, but it really achieves absolutely nothing and you are one of very few people I have heard from who does not agree that this law is stupid in the extreme, and that includes many Thais I talk to as well.

One other point is I do my shopping using my big motorbike using a rack mounted box on the back. No way could I buy 10 litres of booze let alone with my other needed shopping. Sure we know of course that you can shop at the allotted hours but that is not always convenient for Falangs AND Thais. Sorry but do not bother to reply if you can not see what is meant here. Of course I know also we are guests here in Thailand so have to live by their laws of course but there is no reason not to point out the folly of some totally unnecessary laws that if removed would make most Thais happier too (it is supposed to be a democracy here too you know so they should listen to the Thai people's wished too of course).

If somebody could point out why this law is necessary then please do so, but do not accept it is to prevent sales to underaged persons as there is a basic and firm law against that so this law is unnecessary in that respect for cure, that is a no brainer..

The law is generally ass when it comes to drug control, whether it be alcohol, opium, tobacco or grass. I only go out in the morning & afternoon on the "school run", when you can't buy beer. So, I go to Makro & buy a couple of cases. Problem with having a couple of cases in the house is that it's too easy to "put another one in the freezer" after you've had your quota for the evening. So, you end up drinking more. Yeah, great result from a law to cut alcohol consumption. I could use the Mom & Pop stores, but they're only ok if you like to drink extra strong Chang, cr@ppy Leo or way out of date Heineken, close to to where I live. So, as I said earlier, the law is an ass. What's new?
