  1. At Airport Plaza, near the Apple store (4th floor, I think), I saw a shop selling the Rhomba (sp) auto vacuum cleaner. This shop has all kinds of nifty stuff. If you have dogs, don't buy it; they'll chase it around and break it.

  2. CM immigration office needs a complete rethink. Far too many aliens needing their services. Pity the poor staff, who managed to get nice cushy desk jobs for life, and are now finding it near impossible to spend the day by the watercooler chatting about last night's tv.

They are victims of their own corruption and inefficiency.

Get rid of the touts using the 'back door', organize the queues in a logical way, and most of the problems would be gone.

It would take me about an hour to sort out the system to double the throughput and half the effort from immigration staff.

Sorry, no sympathy for the staff.

    Oops, forgot an emoticon wink.png

  4. I had an on-line appt. for last Friday and when I got served the officer asked me to come back on Monday to do my paperwork, there were others in the same situation that were also told the same.

Did they give you another appointment time, or did you just have to join the queue?

  5. Fuller London Porter, London Pride, and ESB are indeed available at several pubs and restaurants in Chiang Mai. Additionally, several ales controlled by the Greene King / Morland conglomerate (Ruddles, Hen’s Tooth, Old Speckled Hen, Greene King IPA, Bellhaven, etc) have started to show up in recent weeks. Figure about 180 to 220 baht per 500ml bottle for each of those depending upon venue. Probably anyone who is British already has a firm opinion of each of those brews, but if you just have to have an ale one of those might be an option.

Any retail outlets for these beers?

  6. Was Keith an actor in 'Nightmare On Elm Street' ? That picture with the hat reminds me of Freddy Krueger ! rolleyes.gif

"Ricardo" the aging, folk rocking member,

    Keith Richards spotted in CM

    The penny drops.........

And all those red herring posts in the travel forum about getting the cheapest flights to UK via Mumbai. Like it thumbsup.gif

  7. It's all just a spoof thread, siamamerican. Don't get so serious. We were just having fun here.

Thanks for the head up and it nice to see how you got baited into a nasty exchange on page one of this thread and now are policing what is too serious.

Just curious how he sees CM so differently than me. We are all unique and I find it interesting. I really doubt Lawrence is offended by my queries. He seems to be at peace with CM and it feels like a small city to him. To me this is ludicrous and interesting at the same time. Being happy wins and happy he is!

We all see it different than others. to each his own. I can hardly wait for the Promenade to open and see if it comes close to it's original plan. Also will it make more movies available than we now have. that would be in both languages.

    Thai AND Mandarin?

  8. Lawrence, you are a strange dude. I was actually surprised you liked the "young" girls in DQ. Young girls. malls, movie theaters Swensons and loud massage parlors are what floats your boat. Why CM when BK has more of all these things?

You love CM for all the reasons I've grown to loath it. It isn't authentic or exotic but is a city that has successfully been westernized. Still like the rainy season but won't find me at the mall. You really think a mall is that interesting?

Are you saying the Thai's are imitations not the authentic?

I am shocked I will have to interrogate my wife to find out what she really is.tongue.png

    Ethnic Chinese? biggrin.png

  9. Indeed Chiang Mai is part of the "Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Corridor System" planning (Google it; innumerable links) but it's clear that the main transportation refers to road traffic. And one thing is sure - it will come.

I don't think so. From Burma to BKK by road you either go down hwy 1 via Lampang, or via Mae Sot & Tak, both routes bypassing Chiang Mai. From China, the route also doesn't come through CM. Trains, forget it.

  10. You must be a lonely bored homeless person to actually enjoy malls and shopping. I used to enjoy the malls for an hour or so, but now, it's fight for a parking space, get what i want/need, quick trip in and out.....unless the wife is with me, then it's torture having to weave thru the crowds and go crazy trying to find what you want without the help of the useless sales idiots. Now, it's.... 'Get me outta here ASAP' and home to peace and quiet.

And they are building more malls argaaaaah!!!

I find it easier to arrive before they open, much easier to park. Then, preferably, leave before they've opened. Save heaps laugh.png

Then call in at Makro & Global House on the way home for supplies thumbsup.gif

  11. Maybe it's a matter of luck but I have not noticed a shortage in the last 6 days. I've topped up the m/c 4 times in the last 6 days at different gas stations (including PTT). But I believe it as I read about this a couple of months ago and then forgot about it. What to do? We can't use gasohol in the m/c. What are others doing?

I would imagine there's still benzine available, until the storage tanks run dry sad.png

Indeed. Just wondering what to do...

I'm sure the govt has it all thought out whistling.gif

  13. I wouldn't exactly describe Doi Inthanon as less touristy than most places in Thailand, unless you're planning to do something like a hike along the ridge north from the summit car park. This thread is about Pai being overcrowded at NY. I'm sure DI is too. The last time I did the nature trail just below the summit, visiting families were trying their upmost to scare away any birds that might have been visible.

  14. About 4 years ago I was in smile bar on Muang Mueng and there was a guy who was a spitting image for Keith Richards. He looked so alike people were having their picture taken with him. Think the guy lived here so might be the same man although 4 years is obviously a long time.

Don't suppose you've got a snap of this geezer?

  15. I was having a scout around on google maps to see where you could locate a new airport out east of the city. Doesn't seem to be anywhere unless at least a couple of villages or more are relocated. Would they do this in Thailand? This isn't China. And moving a couple of villages would only get you an airport the same size as the existing one.

Another of Chiang Mai's urban rural myths?

  16. I saw this and thought for sure it must be so

    but no, in fact

The Rolling Stones guitarist and his spouse Patti Hansen have a holiday home in Parrot Cay on the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean and she always makes sure to take some home comforts for him to eat when they're there, rather than the Asian fare provided by the resort which runs the island.

No need to pack sausages when visiting CM. We're well catered for in the old sausage department wink.png
