A Couple from USA Found Dead in Pattaya Hotel Room

Two American nationals have been found dead inside a hotel room in the Jomtien area of Pattaya, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Officers were called to the scene at around 11:00 on 31 March, according to Pol. Lt. Col. Shinwat Thisala of the Khong Dongtan police substation. Rescue workers also attended the location.

Bodies discovered after several days

The bodies of a man and a woman were found on the floor of a third-floor room, lying together. Police said initial assessments suggest they had been dead for three to four days.

Authorities identified the pair as Richard Carl Speth Jr, 85, and Kelly Marie Bennett, 65, both from the United States.

Hotel staff reported that the couple had been staying at the property for about a month and had not been seen leaving their room for several days.

Concerns were raised after staff noticed a strong odour coming from the room. When there was no response from inside, staff entered and discovered the bodies.

Items found in the room

Investigators said several medical-related items were found inside the room, along with a note written in English.

Police also reported that pills were discovered near the bodies, which may be relevant to the investigation.

The man was wearing a white floral shirt and blue shorts, while the woman was dressed in a colourful shirt and white trousers.

Investigation ongoing

Police said initial findings suggest the possibility that the couple may have taken medication, but this has not been confirmed.

Forensic officers have been assigned to examine the scene and gather further evidence.

The bodies have been transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine, where examinations will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities said further details would depend on the results of the forensic analysis.

I remember in CM there’s a very politically connected guy that owned the hotel in the city and they were using a poison chemical to get rid of the bug bedbugs instead of keeping the mattress outside for many days and then many people died there due to the poison used in the mattress after a while after a few people died there I think they tore down the hotel and the guy who owns it maybe it’s a parking lot or maybe build something else there but it’s really strange cause I think they said it was like an old list smell and there were some young people that actually died due to the dead bug poison I’m not saying this is the case ensure they found medicines the guy is 80+ years old and his wife 60+ years old sure there medicine is there TIT

What really happened.

In early 2011, several foreign tourists and a Thai guide died in Chiang Mai hotels, with investigations suggesting exposure to toxic chemicals or pesticides, notably chlor

. Traces of the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos were allegedly found in rooms at the Downtown Inn, though an official investigation could not definitively identify the exact toxic agent.

Key Details of the 2011 Chiang Mai Hotel Deaths

  • Deaths & Incidents: Between January and February 2011, two New Zealand tourists, a British couple, a US woman, and a Thai tour guide died after visiting or staying at the Downtown Inn, with other travelers falling ill.

  • Suspected Cause: Investigations suggested pesticide use for bedbugs, with an investigation by New Zealand TV reportedly finding traces of the insecticide chlorpyrifos.

  • Official Findings: A five-month investigation by Thai authorities and the WHO could not identify the exact cause but found it was likely a toxic chemical, gas, or pesticide.

  • Controversy: Critics have pointed out "loose controls" over chemical use in Thailand's hospitality industry, noting similar subsequent cases involving toxic chemicals in hotel settings, such as the 2009 deaths of two tourists from phosphine poisoning.

Note: There was a separate, high-profile case involving six deaths due to cyanide poisoning at a Bangkok hotel in 2024, which is distinct from the 2011 Chiang Mai cases.

Except the all pervading stench from the carpet and any curtains they have not replaced.

Why would you suggest that they would not replace anything that was causing a stench in the room?

Rest in Peace. There must have been choices made between the two folks and after all the Doctor Googles on here have to say their say, it doesn’t bring them back does it? . They are gone why belittle them now? Compassion is a good thing imo

Maybe she didn't feel able to carry on without her partner. People take their lives for much less. She may have been the one with life threatening health issues and her partner wanted to go with her.

What would they do with many of the locals having many if not most of those conditions?

Up to the person demanding that immediate actions be taken to discourage at risk people from entering Thailand. Perhaps the critic would like to offer social activities? One of the characteristics of the suicide prone is social isolation. Personally, I can understand why some people wish to be left alone. My friend came over to watch the Turkmenistan - Thailand match last night and had to share his insights on football, the conflict on the border, and how no one outside of Bangkok knows how to drive properly. It was exhausting.

True, although many things people suffer from aren't apparent, especially right off. Immigration is a slow enough process, especially at peak times, and they must get tired going through all the documents. Adding checking for things would take a lot more time, and many people can BS their way through things, especially mental illnesses and depression.

Some of the worst criminals are smart and have money, so they can fool many, while some slow and uneducated might be the safest people coming in. True also on people coming over for a beer and complaining about things you already know full well about. All you can do is let them know that way, hoping they don't keep going on and on. Communication is great as long as it's not all one sided. This is the major complaint women have about men. "He never talks, or listens".

At least one of them could not walk, and used a wheel chair.

Seems reasonable if quality of life had become significantly deteriorated.

Age is relative. What matters here is that she was 20 years younger than her companion, so much less likely to die from a sudden heart attack or be terminally ill.

Could be that her companion was at death's door, and she decided to "leave" with him.

Most half-decent hotels have carpets.

Most in Thailand and other tropical areas use tile or wood, being much easier to maintain in the humid climes, along with the ones near beach areas, sand not being good for carpeting. Some of the 5 stars do have carpeting but most of the others won't. This is also happening in other areas because of the ease of maintenance. Mold and dust mites are a huge concern for carpet owners.

I call it an age that is approaching old. My description of old is someone that cannot either do low level physical work, cannot play any sports at any level of physical activity and lastly have amazing s.e.x.

Good grief! Obviously, they came here for a dignified death and couldn't bear the thought of living without each other. Happy for them. No crying necessary. Everybody deserves a choice.

They even brought their own death drug. I'd like to know what it is so, when the time comes, I can make my choice, too. Good on 'em. RIP

My curiousity is what kind of reputation or national image does Thailand have to have, that people who want to off themselves or commit crime gravitate to Thailand now? Is the Thai government so clueless as to how people view Thailand ? Do they honestly really believe Thailand is seen as a " family friendly destination "? 🤔

Obviously, it was indeed a family-friendly vaction for these two.

Would you rather die in Montana in the winter???

Thailand is a great place to check out and I hope one day to do the same.

The balcony jumpers may leave quite a mess but at least they are sparing others from having to deal with decaying body stench.

That smell which, in case you did not know, is incredibly hard to get out of a room or house...The smell gets into everything and lingers for a very long time...

Why Sea Shepherd lobbed bottles of it onto Japanese whaling ships.
