American Motorcyclist Killed in Pattaya Cement Truck Crash

An American national has died after being crushed by a cement mixer truck in Pattaya on 8 April 2026, following a collision on Sukhumvit Road at the Thepprasit traffic lights. Emergency responders from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Unit were dispatched to the scene, where they found the victim trapped beneath the vehicle with severe injuries.

The crash involved a 10-wheel cement mixer truck registered in Bangkok and a Yamaha Fino motorcycle registered in Chon Buri. The victim identified a 69-year-old American man, Mr. Gilbert, was discovered lying trapped, beneath the truck in a curled position, suffering visible facial injuries and a severely broken left leg. Rescue workers used specialised equipment to extract the individual and provided initial first aid, but the victim later succumbed to their injuries.

According to the truck driver, 39-year-old Prawit, he had been delivering cement to a customer in Soi Thepprasit and was returning to Laem Chabang to reload. He stated that while turning left onto Sukhumvit Road, he heard a loud impact resembling a collision with an object. Upon inspection, he realised he had struck the motorcycle and that a person had been seriously injured. Dash-cam footage showed the motorcycle attempting to pass the truck, on the left side blindspot, as it was turning at the traffic lights.

Police have begun a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash, including further questioning of the driver, examination of evidence at the scene and reviewing CCTV in the area. Authorities are working to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal collision and whether any traffic laws were violated. Daily News reported that officials are expected to review findings from the investigation before deciding on any possible legal action against the driver.

I am sure many remember the incident at the North Rd/Naklua Rd roundabout (as it was then), where two young girls on a motorcycle were killed by a cement truck. Appeared they were trying to undertake on the roundabout and the truck was making a left onto North Rd.

I suspect the truck driver has many blind spots.

Totally agree. The cement truck had his signal on long before the bike started to try and overtake on the inside.

Sad event ....however.

Yes, very sad. But why say that?

I’m extra watchful when I see a concrete truck – they are usually racing against the clock carrying a load of wet concrete to a construction site.

These loaded trucks have a lot of momentum and cannot manoeuvre or stop easily.

I saw an old man killed as he could not cross the road fast enough and the concrete truck just mowed him down.

I see this type of bad riding behaviour in Pattaya from foreigners both females and males, middle aged and elderly.

I travel around Thailand regularly, most foreigners in regional Thailand ride respectfully and safely.

Poor Pattaya.

The cement truck driver had his indicator on and was moving over before the motorcycle even appeared in view.

Regardless of whether the bike was in a blind spot or not, undertaking a clearly turning vehicle like he did was always going to be dangerous. The bike rider had the space, he had the time, to yield to the cement truck and let it complete its turn. This didn't need to happen. ☹️

What? The only items wrong with here are you and the American motorbike rider. The cement truck was signaling a turn left, when the American started to undertake on the inside during a turn. 100% the Americans fault! I guess we have to be very careful if you are still out in traffic with a crazy comment like that!

Not a week goes by without another motorbike tragedy.

There is something seriously wrong with motorbike riders where they think it's ok to ignore staying in the lane and think because they are smaller than cars they are allowed to weave in and out of lanes as they like.

Sad stuff. What a tragic way to die, being crushed by a cement truck.

RIP to the American guy, that tried to drive a motorcycyle like a Thai, can’t tell you how many times as a passenger we have barely missed, by inches, being hit by a truck while turning left at intersection. His time was just up is all, we all have an expiration date. That said, just yesterday, while walking in Chom Tian, toward market, a cement truck coming down the road came so close to me, it knocked my hat off, the cement chute was bouncing around like crazy, lucky for me, it is hard to speed down that road because of the traffic or it may have just knocked more than my hat off!!

Looks like they were both rushing a bit before the traffic signal change - especially the bike.

RIP poor fella but two basic rules of the road were broken:

  1. Under/over taking near a road junction.

  2. Attempting lane change immediately after a turn.

Both were obviously particularly bad moves. I don't think the truck driver saw anything until it was too late.

Some folks just shouldn't try to ride MC. Aside from trying to pass on the left while both turning, he shows his inexperience, buy putting is foot down while doing so.

A horribly unnecessary accident for the rider and also the truck driver, who will now no doubt be an emotional wreck after this.

Patience is something lost here in Thailand, we all see it every day and unfortunately the more it is witnessed, the more likely we are to adopt the same mindset of hurry hurry hurry and anything goes.

5 seconds lost on the riders journey and this story would not be here. There are just too many things on Thai roads that are waiting to bite us all in the rse, defensive riding/driving is a must.

RIP sir.
