Australian disputes 32,540 baht Pattaya bar bill

An Australian tourist was taken to Pattaya City Police Station after refusing to pay a 32,540 baht drinks bill at a beer bar in Soi Buakhao, Pattaya.

The dispute followed a drinking session which, staff said, began at about 8am on 12 August and continued for more than 13 hours until around 9pm. Police have recorded the matter and are checking the bar's orders and bill before deciding on further legal steps.

Bar opened early for regular customer

The bar's 46-year-old owner, Khun Meleeya, and staff brought the Australian, identified as 53-year-old Mr Thompson, to Pattaya City Police Station.

Staff told police that Mr Thompson arrived at around 8am, before the premises had opened for business. They said the owner agreed to open specially for him because he had previously visited other bars in the same group and had a good record of paying his bills.

During the day, staff said, he bought drinks for several female employees. He also rang the bell on several occasions to buy drinks for all staff in the bar, resulting in a large number of employees joining him at his table.

The eventual total for the drinks ordered during the session was 32,540 baht, according to the bar.

Refusal followed invitation to bar fine

Later that evening, Mr Thompson became friendly with one female member of staff and invited to bar fine her to go out with him after the bar closed, employees said.

She declined the invitation, after which he became angry and refused to settle the bill for drinks bought for staff throughout the day, according to the bar's account.

Staff said they tried to resolve the matter directly, arguing that the bar had to cover staff wages and the cost of the drinks supplied during the long session. When no agreement was reached, they sought police assistance.

Mr Thompson has disputed the amount claimed, telling officers that the bill was not as high as stated. He has continued to refuse payment, police were told.

For foreign visitors and expatriates in Pattaya, the case is a reminder that buying rounds, ringing the bell and offering staff drinks can quickly build a substantial tab. Anyone ordering drinks for others should ask for the running total and retain itemised bills, particularly during lengthy sessions.

Police checking bar records

Pol Lt Col Kanoknan Suksri, an inquiry officer at Pattaya City Police Station, invited both sides to give statements.

Police have made a daily record of the complaint as evidence and will examine the purchase details and bill, before interviewing both parties again, once Mr Thompson has sobered up, to establish the facts and proceed with legal procedures, if no agreement is made.

13 hours, 32,540 baht, multiple rounds for the entire bar… and then the final straw was apparently being told “no” by the girl. 😂

That’s not a bar bill. That’s 13 hours of very expensive emotional investment.

Ya gotta give it to the Aussies there is no doubt it they can sure drink . A 13 hour session by Mr. Thompson is not bad but when the final bell rang and he was informed how much he had rung up on his tab he was in more trouble than Ned Kelly so he will have to just pay up and shut up. DING DONG.

Drinking from 8 AM to 9 PM is alcoholism,

Depends if you do it once in a while to let loose.

Regular habit, yes.

It's not only the alcohol that drives men to these bars. There is an emotional high provided by these women as they are masters of stroking a man's ego. Or they just enjoy the female company.

Going to bars isn't a problem, if that's what you like and there are women there that are the main interests. I used to go myself when I was younger, to see the women , hear music and have a few drinks. Regular habits that harm one are a problem, and are a major reason so many have this disease and the diseases that come from it.

Most probably drunk by the end of the day and expected special services for his patronage. The female staff never agreed to go out with him and correctly turned down his offer. The entitled punter more than likely drained of cash and no guarantee he would not turn violent.

"You can ring my beeelllll, ring my bell"

Anyway perhaps the bar should have told him to pay after reaching say 10K on the bill. Instead of letting it run all the way up that high.

Use your head and settle up from time to time.

I have been enjoying myself in a bar in Thailand and knowing the eternal wisdom "I got dozens of friends, and the fun never ends... as long as I'm buying". I realized I was spending more than I had cash on hand, but I wanted to soldier on. The bar graciously allowed two bargirls to accompany me to an ATM and the party continued.

As far as ringing the bell, I have done this on several occasions. But only after looking around and realizing the place was just about empty of customers and workers.

AS long as I'm quoting songs, did the bar girls sing to the guy?:

The minute you walked in the joint,
I could see you were a man of
distinction,
A real big spender,
good looking, so refined...

That would make the padding of the bill decidedly more difficult, the bigger the number the easier it is to slide extra charges in.

Nope. Ringing the bell means you buy a drink (any drink) for both ALL of the staff and ALL of the patrons in the bar at the time of ringing the bell.

Yes, and what's the psychology of people who do that?

I suppose it could be considered generosity.

Or is it showing off?

Look at me, I'm rich. I can buy drinks for the entire village.

It can be both. If the person has had a good day at business and wants to share his good fortune, then it's generosiy. This person will usually only ring the bell once. The Aussie on the other hand is showing off. Demands the bar to open at 8 am and then expects special services from a female staff member after the bar closes.

I am wondering why people want to have a drink at 8 am.. The bar opened for him, so not many persons will there have been, not even waitresses, i suppose for just 1 man. A bit strange story, as the bar was closed how could it open.. was the owner there?

And than all the papers with his drinks...It is so easy to put a few extra, as the man has no clue what is is spending. Anyway the bill is very expensive and with about 2500 THB an hour average spending I am wondering what he was drinking in 13 hours...Good lesson for everybody. Pay direct in bars and don't wait till you leave.

This comment reeks of missing knowledge of how Thailand really works.

That a bar has people and can open at any time is not strange at all. many girls working live and sleep in a room backside and sometimes the owner too. You have western thinking and believe that a bar owner goes home to the villa in the suburbs. Really???

Of course, they can and might put extra papers to add to the bill. However, I don´t see the reason here as he was drinking for 13h and got so drunk buying lady drinks and ringing the bell that even a bar girl refused his company! He might very well been drinking beer. Easy, ring the bell on time per hour in general 4 people + 4 lady drinks per time, and that´s low counting. That will be about 1200. After that 5 lady drinks on the side per hour: 1000 baht more. Add to that what he drink, and you will have your 2500.

The only thing here, is that reality is a good lesson for you.

I have recently had a bar ask me to initial each receipt as they put them in the bin.

Some protection for customer, but if a guy is playing the big spender (at a Pattay beer bar LOL) he may not want to ruin his image by poring over receipts and will just sign without really looking.

I muddied the water there, I only had this happen at a Soi Cowboy bar, never at a beer bar.

$2500 Baht per hour. If he had an average of 3 beers per hr @ $100 Baht each, that means the girls, even at $200 baht a drink, is 11 drinks per hour. So that means supplying 3-4 girls every hour with a minimum of 3 drinks per hour, at @200 baht per lady drink, plus his 3 beers in order to spend $2500 Baht/Hr.

That also would mean the ole boy drank 39 beers. Highly unlikely.

Somethings not right. Somethings amiss.

Is there a bigger blow to a man's ego and self-esteem than being turned down by a working girl?

It's not a big deal many working girls can be quite particular about their choices, and they have the right to be. When I was single I realized that and when I got rejected it was just no big deal, you just move on.

The man should pay his bar tab, and the bar should be fined ฿32,450 for serving alcohol out of hours and allowing a customer to get overly intoxicated. The fine should be remitted to a substance abuse program.

This guy sounds like a bit of a numbskull, without a life. Who comes to a bar at 8:00 a.m. and specifically asks them to open? And why? And who stays in a bar for 13 hours? Specifically someone who does not have a life.

Anytime you ring the bell it's going to be a few thousand baht minimum. It sounds like that bill was accurate, and that he just didn't realize how expensive the experience was going to be, and just wanted to be a big shot for a day.

It’s not just what he was drinking. He was ordering lady drinks also. I’m surprised it’s as little as 2.5k per hour

A decent responsible establishment would have never let him go that far. I think a pretty good discount should be offered.

Who does that? I've always taken care of myself with nutrition, not smoking anything besides occasional weed, drinking not to excess but occasionally and exercise. It's up to everyone what they want to do with their lives and bodies. I prefer not taking more chances than necessary, as I want to live as long as possible for my children and my own hobbies and interests.

This guy might very well been drinking and giving away building up a tab like that during 13h, and that´s incredibly stupid! He should pay for his stupidity!

However, the bar just says they chose to open early just because of the customer. They should face losing their alcohol license and hefty fine. They can´t do like they want!

Moreover, we can all understand this guy must have been galactically drunk, which means the bar served him more than they should. Also, a reason to take away license and more fines!

Are bars with entertainment licences not permitted to serve alcohol at 8am?

there was no indication in the article that he was as drunk as you suggest, there was confirmation that he had been buying drinks for everyone else all day though.
