Bangkok floods ease but losses put at 12.3bn baht

Floodwaters were still affecting several Bangkok communities on Monday 28 September 2026, despite reduced rainfall, as officials continued drainage work and moved some residents to temporary shelters.

At least eight people have reportedly died in flooding nationwide over the past 10 days. The government has allocated about 2 billion baht from central funds for nationwide flood relief covering flooding reported from 20 September onwards.

Flooded sois remain in Bangkok

Government spokesperson Ekkaphop Pienpisan said rainfall in Bangkok had fallen and some roads had returned to normal. However, heavily flooded areas remained, including Kheha Khlong Chan, Kheha Rom Klao, Kheha Ram Inthra, Soi Prasert-Manukit 27, Soi Lat Phrao 101/1 and Soi Ramkhamhaeng 24.

The Chao Phraya Dam is continuing to release water at 1,900 cubic metres per second, with no increase in the discharge rate, according to the government.

Bangkok faces the largest projected losses

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce's Centre for Business and Economic Forecasting estimates flooding between 25 and 29 September could cause 12.28 billion baht in economic losses, equal to 0.066% of annual GDP.

Bangkok is projected to account for 7.01 billion baht, or 57% of the total. The eastern region could lose 2.98 billion baht, while Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi and Nakhon Pathom are expected to suffer combined losses of around 1.84 billion baht.

The centre said total losses could range from 5.9 billion to 20.6 billion baht, depending on the extent of flooding and the speed at which business activity resumes. Its calculation does not cover damage to homes, property, vehicles, stock or agricultural output.

Consumer spending, tourism and urban services have been among the sectors most affected, with consequences for hotels, restaurants, travel and smaller businesses. Industrial activity has mainly been affected by workers' journeys and raw-material transport, while no industrial estates in the Eastern Economic Corridor have reportedly stopped production.

More areas under watch nationwide

Authorities are monitoring vulnerable locations in Kanchanaburi, Phetchaburi and Rayong, where residents have been told to follow official updates and evacuation.

Four Phetchaburi districts - Kaeng Krachan, Tha Yang, Ban Lat and Mueang Phetchaburi - are under watch after rain north of Kaeng Krachan Dam required increased water releases.

In Rayong, Prasae Reservoir stood at 112.6% capacity at 7am on Monday, requiring further spillway discharge. Parts of Klaeng and Wang Chan districts could be affected. Officials said Khao Chuk reservoir's embankment had not broken, as earlier reported, although erosion damaged part of the right side of its spillway.

Bangkok residents may qualify for the same basic compensation criteria used elsewhere, but details of the capital's scheme have yet to be finalised. The forecasting centre expects conditions to ease within a week if flooding does not persist, but warned of added economic pressure if Chao Phraya basin flooding continues into the fourth quarter.
