Border Police Armoury Rocked by Blasts in Surin

An explosion and fire tore through an armoury inside Border Patrol Police Subdivision 21 (BPP 21) in Surin province on 24 February 2026, injuring one officer and forcing authorities to seal off the area as a danger zone. Officials said the initial blast occurred in a weapons storage building and triggered further explosions as flames spread. The situation was later brought under control, but access remains restricted pending a full inspection.

At 21.20 on 24 February, Surin Governor Jamroen Waenphet and Maj Gen Chaiyanakorn Kitkhana, commander of the 25th Army Circle (MTB 25), held a press briefing on the incident. The governor said a fire broke out in Weapons Storage Building 1, which housed mortar rounds and RPG ammunition. Officers shouted warnings for people to run before flames spread to Building 2, used to store small-arms ammunition, where further explosions followed.

One officer sustained minor injuries after being struck in the knee by shrapnel. Multiple fire engines, including foam and water units, were deployed to extinguish the fire and tommonitor the site overnight. No night-time inspection will take place, with drones set to survey the area in daylight once visibility improves.

Ambulances and two hospitals were placed on standby, and traffic in front of the camp was stopped. On the morning of 25 February, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team will enter first to assess whether to recover or destroy remaining munitions.

Maj Gen Chaiyanakorn said the likely cause was extreme heat, noting that temperatures had been very high on the day of the incident. Officers had reportedly opened the warehouse doors for ventilation and the facility is equipped with cooling sprinklers that must be activated when temperatures exceed 40C. He added that most residents within the BPP compound are officers’ families and the general public has not been affected.

Amarin reported that the area remains sealed due to the risk of unexploded ordnance. Multiple agencies, including provincial authorities, rescue units, Surin Army  units and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, are continuing to assess structural stability and overall safety at the site over night and into the morning. If no further flare ups occur, officials expect to conduct a detailed examination and damage assessment on 25 February.

Key Takeaways

• An explosion and fire at BPP 21 in Surin on 24 February 2026 injured one officer and damaged two ammunition buildings.

• Authorities believe extreme heat may have triggered the blast, with temperatures reported as very high that day.

• The site remains sealed as a danger zone pending EOD inspection and a full damage assessment.

Article mentions a fire broke out at the storage facility before the explosions occurred.

No because its not true, it didn't happen without ignition of some kind. Its just not how it works.

Makes for a good story though when people don't know any better

damaged two ammunition buildings.

At least ammunition was destroyed that could have potentially been used against Cambodia!

I don't think they need help, they are quite capable of blowing themselves up without assistance.

What a dumb reply!

It was a Thai Police Armoury within Surin Province that caught fire and exploded.

No Khmer involvement, so no ass kicking!

Even the Thai Military have not mentioned Cambodia in its usual propaganda!

UPDATE

Blast Damaged Homes Near Surin Border Base

Authorities are accelerating damage assessments after the explosion at the armoury of Border Patrol Police Subdivision 21 (BPP 21) in Surin province, with shockwaves reported to have damaged nearby homes. Residents in affected areas have temporarily relocated following the late-night blast. Officials continue to seal off the site as a danger zone while safety inspections proceed.

On 25 February, reporters said police maintained strict cordons around the compound, particularly the ammunition storage area where the explosion occurred. The site has been designated a “danger zone”, with entry restricted to authorised personnel only. Although the fire has been fully extinguished, officers said a detailed safety survey must be completed before evidence can be collected, citing concerns over possible unexploded ordnance or other residual risks.

In Ban Klon Nuea, Khum Rong Fai Fa, Chenian subdistrict, Mueang district, located 300 metres from the armoury, around 12 homes were found to have sustained damage from the blast pressure. Ceilings, light fittings and window glass were shattered, while several wooden doors were visibly warped. Fragments resembling parts of explosive devices were reportedly scattered around residential properties.

Supitra Boonyuen, 58, said she heard a loud explosion followed by repeated sounds similar to gunfire. When she opened her curtains, she saw flames rising high with intermittent blasts continuing. She said the shockwave caused light bulbs to fall, windows to crack and the structure of her home to shake heavily.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this. It was very frightening,” she said, adding that she immediately drove to stay with relatives in the town centre and remains anxious about returning.

Another resident, identified as Wanida, owner of house number 8, Moo 20, Chenian subdistrict, said her home suffered broken windows, with seven panes shattered, ceiling panels collapsing and light fixtures dislodged. She and her husband initially thought a power transformer had exploded, but after hearing repeated blasts, her British husband said it was unlikely to be a transformer. They left the house immediately with only their mobile phones and released their dog before fleeing.

She added that her husband has heart disease and rescue workers had to retrieve his medication before the couple rented a room in town. Returning in the morning, they found extensive damage and admitted they had focused solely on escaping safely during the incident. She said that during the year they had rented the property, they had not known an armoury was located nearby.

Daily News reported that the village head has conducted an initial survey of the damage. Assistance measures and a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion remain under way by relevant agencies.

Key Takeaways

• Around 12 homes within 300 metres of BPP 21 were damaged by blast shockwaves.

• Authorities have sealed the armoury site as a danger zone despite the fire being extinguished.

• Residents have temporarily relocated as safety inspections and investigations continue.

Authorities in Surin have confirmed that the blasts at the Border Patrol Police Division 21 armoury were likely triggered by extreme heat, which caused stored ammunition and RPGs to ignite.

While sabotage has been ruled out, the incident highlights the risks of munitions storage in Thailand’s climate. As one officer noted, even a minor fire can escalate quickly when explosives are involved.

It's one thing to expect your ordnance to go off in the heat of battle, and quite another to have it explode in the heat of day!

"Extreme heat" from a fire caused by a discarded cigarette perhaps?

You don't seriously think this incident would in any way prevent Thailand from defending itself against Cambodia's reckless, ill-advised, and undisciplined shenanigans, do you?

For every bullet that may have been destroyed at the depot, I'm quite sure there are countless thousands elsewhere in Thailand. Same with every other category of munition.
