Briton Leaves Phuket After Sword Clash

A British man, who has not been named by authorities, who was involved in a violent confrontation with a Thai Muay Thai instructor in Phuket has reportedly returned to the United Kingdom for medical treatment while police continue investigating the altercation.

The clash took place in Soi Ta-iad, Chalong and gained widespread attention after video footage circulated on social media. The footage showed a confrontation between a foreign man carrying a metal baton or aluminium bar and a 50-year-old Thai Muay Thai instructor identified as Waikun, who was armed with a sword.

According to Waikun, the dispute began when he warned the foreign motorcyclist about allegedly dangerous riding in the narrow street. The warning led to a verbal argument which escalated into a physical confrontation.

Waikun said the foreign man punched him several times in the face and left eye during the initial encounter. Medical examinations later found that he had suffered a fractured eye socket, blurred vision and pain around his left eye and jaw.

The Muay Thai instructor said he subsequently returned to his home and retrieved a sword because he feared he could be attacked again. He maintained that he acted in self-defence and had no intention of attacking the foreign man first.

In the latest development, local reports indicate that the British national has already left Thailand and flown back to the United Kingdom. Reports claim he departed without undergoing further treatment in Thailand and chose to continue his recovery at home instead.

According to a woman described as a friend of the British man, he denied being intoxicated during the confrontation. She said he told her: “I insist I was not drunk, and what happened to me went beyond self-defence.”

The same reports suggested that medical treatment in Thailand could have cost as much as 250,000 baht, although no official confirmation of treatment costs has been released.

Investigators are continuing to review witness statements, medical reports and video evidence to establish the full sequence of events. Authorities are expected to determine whether legal action will follow once the investigation is completed.

Nice Gash!

Good on him for going to seek medical care rather than staying here and evetually throwing up a gofundme.

He was smart to leave Thailand while he could. Doesn't have to wait around and possibly be charged with something. This will make his life a lot simpler.

I don't think going home and returning with a weapon is classed as self defence .
Going home and staying there is self defence.

According to a woman described as a friend of the British man, he denied being intoxicated during the confrontation. She said he told her: “I insist I was not drunk, and what happened to me went beyond self-defence.” ==> There should be no doubt that this foreigner passed the test on "how to get killed 101" with flying colours. No alcohol. No cheating. Just pure talent. I salute you. May our paths never meet.

Did he not come with insurance?

Goes back and expects the taxpayer to pay the bill in soft touch Britain.

he's lucky he didnt get his arm severed. maybe the Thai guy didnt know how to use it.

A sharp sword and the right technique can cut an arm like hot knife on butter.

and he aint boxing for another year with that arm, cut through muscle and tendon, damn, that was super nasty... if he regains any wrist movement, he will be very lucky.

Good news for the Thai guy, I presume - no falang no case. Just my guess, despite BIB saying the investigation continues.

I wish there was insight into the initial confrontation - what exactly set him off to think that the iron bar was a good idea? It was a comically bad decision and something he will regret for a long time with that kind of injury.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes - seems fitting.

Surely he should have been made to stay whilst the investigation was being carried out ?

Hopefully this doesn't stop working out what went on.

Yes. Definately not the kind of gash he was expecting to get in Thailand.

I'm a Brit but when I see the antics of some of my countrymen I can't help thinking an IQ test should be given to any chav wanting to travel further east that exotic Margate or Caister on Sea.

Why? Surely if a crime has been committed it should be investigated. What type of nonsense is that to say 'just go home' and we will pretend it never happened.

This is no future lesson for Benidorm Brits who come and do it again - you need detterants. If the outcome is you can simply run off back to your country, the Benidorm crew will continue their ways.

Why wasn't his passport taken during the investigation ?

The Thai mans chain of events seems extremely one sided...

I'm wondering what really happened....

Going home and fetching a sword is not exactly self defence - I'm wondering how close to home his this even happend (i.e. outside it ?).

If a Thai Muai Thai instructor got annoyed at a foreigners riding and decided to get aggressive with him, even physical, received a beating, lost face, then went to get a weapon from his nearby house and use it, the brit using a bar to protect himself and received a huge-gash on his arm.... that seems somewhat feasible - purely a guess - but the events as described by the Thai guy are very one sided - I wonder what really happened.

In the Thaiger its stated that the Thai man 'warned' two foreigner riders for riding too slowly next to each other.

So they weren't driving dangerously - they were riding too slowly for him.... It seems the Thai man might have been the instigator of the confrontation.

He was certainly the aggressor when chasing the Brit down with the sword - that was attack, not self defense.

Was that really retaliation from an unprovoked attack from the Brit whom he'd politely advised to ride more safely, then the Brit went from that to beating him without physical provocation ? hmmm...
