Foreign Tourist Flees After Jomtien Shop Clash

A foreign tourist fled after a confrontation with convenience store staff and bystanders outside a 7/11 store on Jomtien Beach Road, following allegations that he stole drinks from the store.

Video clips shared widely on social media showed a chaotic scene outside the convenience store. The footage, posted alongside claims that the foreign man had “stolen goods and refused to pay”, captured the tourist arguing with staff before attempting to leave the area on a motorcycle.

According to reports, the man had arrived at the shop with his girlfriend before staff accused the pair of stealing two bottles of energy drink. Employees reportedly stopped them before they left the store and attempted to discuss payment of a store fine, but the tourists allegedly refused and tried to walk away.

The dispute escalated in the car park outside the shop when a man wearing a black shirt and other Thai bystanders joined staff in attempting to stop the tourist from leaving. Video footage showed pushing, pulling and physical scuffling as the tourist tried to ride away on his motorcycle.

During the struggle, the tourist’s bag was reportedly torn and damaged. The man and his girlfriend then took advantage of the confusion to run from the scene, leaving behind the motorcycle and a pair of shoes outside the store.

Journalists later visited the convenience store, but staff declined requests for interviews or permission to film inside the premises. No additional official statement was issued by the business.

The incident has triggered widespread criticism online, with social media users questioning why members of the public tried to physically restrained the suspect instead of contacting police to handle the matter through legal procedures. Concerns were also raised about the level of force used during the confrontation in a public area.

Police at Pattaya City Police Station are reviewing video footage and witness accounts as part of an investigation into the incident. Authorities said no complaint had yet been filed by the foreign tourists involved.

Investigators are expected to determine whether any offences were committed by either side during the confrontation and whether further legal action will follow.

We don't know if he stole anything.

My guess would be some sort of misunderstanding, perhaps the shop had one of those misleading signs with some Thai language and then a big 'Free' in English.

The Thai reads something like buy this that and something else then get this 'Free' foreigner justs sees 'Free'. ???

Its usually advertised as buy 1 get 1 free , but you need to be member to claim the offer .

Its not for non members

CCTV usually resolves these issues if you stay and discuss it. 7-11 usually has every aisle covered.

I’ve seen some over reach in my time but suggesting that a foreigner walks into 7-11 and see a paragraph of writing with the word “free” in it and so thinks stuff in the shop is actually free, pretty much takes the biscuit.

I couldn’t make this stuff up…..but apparently you can. 👏👏👏👏

Great Britain is made up of the 3 mainland countries which are England , Scotland and Wales.

These 3 countries are British.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are made up with Great Britain and Northern Ireland..

Northern Ireland are not part of the mainland of Great Britain ,they are part of the United Kingdom .

I have a UK passport and I am British , but my passport is the United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

If Northern Ireland were part of Great Britain our passports would just say Great Britain and not say United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

"British" refers to anything pertaining to or originating from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, including its people, culture, and language. The original and native language of Northern Ireland is Irish (also known as Irish Gaelic).

An altercation over a drink at 7-11? I've never been in a 7-Eleven and gotten grief from the staff so one has to presume that this guy made a big deal about a very low cost drink. So that is the ultimate example of causing your own problems in life, and inflicting them upon others. What a goon.

Thailand does indeed seem to be attracting quite a few lowlifes these days and for some reason they seem to be concentrated in the Pattaya area. Yikes.

Whatever the ins and outs of this story, if I was unjustly accused of stealing in a shop, and couldn't settle things with the staff (like, prove I hadn't) then I would be the one calling the police. Not running away and fighting.

Look at the kid and tell me his IQ is above 70. Take that into account and the pieces fall into place.

If he hadn’t even left the shop with goods then technically it wasn’t theft , staff accused him of theft and demanded a store “fine”

question is is the fine the goal ?

what store is it?

Gotta be honest here: I didn't feel like ruining my morning by watching yet another reel of senseless farang violence outside a 7-11. But I figured pretty much as you have parsed for me. Thanks for confirming.

And I say again: it will make no difference if such types come in on 30 or 60 day VE. They don't care about overstay anyway.

What do you suggest?

My suggestion would have been to let them walk.

Solving this legally would have required letting him/them go, and the police finding them later. No one at the store had the legal right to detain them, let alone assault them. The only people with the right to physically detain anyone are the police and/or registered security guards. I've never seen a security guard at a Seven. Who were those thugs in black shirts?

Free 90 scratch that 60 ? no 30 day visa.

Many countries offer a 90 day visa (Australia, Japan etc.) and they don't have the problems we see here.

The scum will still arrive on 30 day visas. Thailand has to start screening visitors and enforcing basic civil society laws a sis done elsewhere.

If the person does not leave a store with the merchandise or consume the goods without paying , a theft has not occurred.

The shop workers wanted to impose a "store penalty". Who do you think would have kept the money? The clerks or the shop? Looks like a nice money maker. Accuse someone of stealing and demand a penalty fee. Of course the people would would run. Looks more like an attempted shakedown that failed.

How unusual Thais not fighting fairly and one on one. I wonder if it had been a Thai stealing they would have done the same?
