Former Tourist Police officer arrested with loaded gun

"Police moved in and subdued him, seizing the weapon without anyone being injured."

A couple of accidental punches to the gut might have provided the drunk fool with a few minutes to catch his breath and think about the error of his ways instead of demanding his gun back.

You couldn't make this story if you tried. As they say, truth is stranger than fiction. This 80 year-old loser even has his own fictional nickname of Police Senior Sergeant Major Somchai. To put it mildly his close female friend from the video was not exactly catch of the sea. Not sure which of the two is the scariest. Based on his location of Nong Prue, it would not surprise me if he was a former Pattaya tourist police officer. An organization not known for vetting applicants.

Back in the day, Pattaya tourist police were well known for attracting the Rambo types. Give them a badge and they thought they were above everyone. The former head of the foreign contingent of the Pattaya TP had to do a runner back to his home country because of alleged inappropriate sexual behaviors.

This happens all over for the simple reason that some of those who enter the police system are there looking for power and control. It is about emotional immaturity. For some, controlling behavior is a deeply ingrained trauma response or survival mechanism developed during an unpredictable childhood rather than a simple character flaw.

People like this don't see themselves as the problem, like a narcissistic personality, and put the blame on others from that childhood trauma. The older they get, the more ingrained.

This has little to do with what the woman looked like to anyone else but what she was to him. Many who control aren't controlling beautiful women but average ones. At 80 he likely wasn't going to change as this has been him all along. The NPD often becomes more rigid and angry with age. For others without the NPD personality it's possible to become more calm and congenial as they age.

Many positions have opportunities for illegal cash, and those with power even more so. Trafficking has some looking the other way who get that cash. This has always been and always will be. One corrupt cop who's in charge enlists others to help his cause, until they all are busted by someone on the outside. It's still about the power and control and abuse of it.

The part of your post I was replying to pointed at motivation. For many, the motivation is the money, particularly, corrupt money, which can be big money.

It goes from the traffic control officer taking money for not wearing a helmet, all the way to guys like Joe Ferrari, who tortured and killed a suspect, whilst living a life of luxury, despite an official meager salary.

I see your point, it's the power and control that allows them to be corrupt and take big money, but the point I am making is it's the lure of that big money that motivates many of them to join the police department in the first place. Imagine if they cleaned up the corruption, applicants to join would fall off a cliff.

Pretty sure every other Somchai is carrying a gun with them nowadays.

Many have loss faith in the police and justice system. Most of them are using arms for self protection or to seek revenge.

Joking aside, are the Tourist Police even a thing anymore? Other than standing near the entrance of Pattaya's walking street, I can't remember the last time I saw one in Bangkok. What do they do all day and where?

I believe, "Thaksin Shinawatra" made his first big money when he was at the RTP !!! Just like many Thai politicians started at the RTP. It's a good way to make big money and the right connections.

You are correct. Thaksin was a police officer. One can only imagine how much corrupt payments he received, allow him to buy promotion after promotion, until he reached the glass ceiling of corrupt payments, and went into business.

How much more successful would Thailand be, in 2026, as a nation, if this accepted culture of corruption was stamped out years ago?
