German man hurt in Pattaya hotel fall

A 33-year-old German man was seriously injured after falling backwards from a second-floor hotel balcony in Pattaya in the early hours of 1 October. Police are investigating the circumstances of the fall at a hotel in Soi Pratumnak 2.

Pattaya City Police investigator Police Sub-Lieutenant Sakayaphap Chaidech received the report at 3.15am and coordinated with Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Pattaya rescue volunteers.

The injured man was later identified as Philipp Hohmann, a German national. He was found lying on the ground beside the hotel with head injuries and heavy bleeding.

Emergency treatment after balcony fall

Rescuers gave Mr Hohmann first aid at the scene before rushing him to hospital. Bloodstains, broken branches and one of his shoes were found in the area below the balcony.

A friend told police that Mr Hohmann had been smoking on the balcony outside his second-floor room. He had reportedly been leaning back against the balcony wall before falling backwards to the ground.

The friend then alerted hotel staff to seek help.

Daeng, 52, the hotel's receptionist, said Mr Hohmann had been staying on the second floor with a friend of the same nationality. She said his friend ran to reception to report that he had fallen from the second floor, prompting staff to call the authorities.

Police find no signs of struggle

Police and detectives inspected Mr Hohmann's room and said they found no signs of a struggle or other suspicious circumstances inside.

However, officers found broken glass, cannabis and cannabis-smoking equipment. These items were photographed and recorded as evidence.

Police are continuing to question Mr Hohmann's friend and examine the available evidence to establish the exact cause of the incident.

If it's the hotel I'm thinking of the balcony railings are just above chair height, mine are at least a foot higher

And once again, the interminable debate over the shockingly low balconies in Thailand is swiftly re-ignited.

Yeah, it´s always @scubascuba3 who fixes that. Probably one of the many who can´t see that the railing is low and stay away from it. Doesn´t have to be more complicated, right Scuba?

As has been reported on many occasions, Thailand's building codes regarding balcony heights are the same as the European and US regulations.
