Krabi kosher restaurant investigated over alleged nominee owner

Officials in Krabi have inspected a kosher restaurant in Ao Nang after it reopened following the deportation of its former Israeli owner over an alleged nominee arrangement.

Krabi Governor Angkoon Sila Thawikul led the inspection. Authorities had previously found that the restaurant's actual owner was an Israeli national who allegedly used two Thai nationals as nominees to operate the business.

Restaurant reopened after former owner was deported

The Krabi Provincial Court imposed a penalty in the earlier case, after which the Israeli owner was deported from Thailand.

About 20 days later, a new company was registered to run the restaurant “Beit Hiliel house”, listing a Thai businessperson from Chiang Mai as its owner. The premises subsequently reopened, reportedly setting aside part of the restaurant for Jewish religious ceremonies.

Food, alcohol and bread seized

During the latest inspection, officials said almost all products at the restaurant lacked Thai Food and Drug Administration registration or approval. They also alleged that the goods had not completed the required customs import procedures.

The products included frozen food, bread and alcoholic beverages. Officials further noted that the menu was written entirely in Hebrew, without Thai-language descriptions, which they said failed to meet applicable requirements.

Packaging found at the restaurant indicated that some goods had been sent from Bangkok and Surat Thani. The items were seized as evidence while officials investigate how they entered Thailand.

The operator faces a charge of importing goods without completing the required customs procedures. Authorities have also contacted the listed business owner to provide information for the inquiry.

Transfers to Israeli national examined

Investigators reviewing the restaurant's financial records reportedly found transfers to an Israeli national who was not named as the business owner. That individual was said to have close ties to the former owner who was deported.

The transfer amounts allegedly matched the restaurant's declared revenue during a period running from August to July. Officials are examining those transactions as part of the wider investigation.

The inspection also raised questions over the restaurant's reported connections to Chabad groups operating in Thailand. For foreign investors and business operators, the inquiry highlights the continued scrutiny of arrangements where the person listed as owner may not be the person authorities believe controls a business.

More harassment. What about all the Chinese nominees?

Well, uhh, how about all the UK nominees, Australian nominees, American nominees? I know a small chain of British Groceries. They get a container from the UK every month filled with UK specialties. Non have any Thai official stickers. They go directly from the container to the store shelves.

Yah, "That's different!"

There's nothing illegal about having a legitimate nominee company that operates a legitimate business here in Thailand. Hopefully the crackdown is not about that, it's about people skirting the law and using loopholes to their advantage.

Unfortunately some of that animosity is also being directed towards Jews who have no affiliation with Israel nor any sympathy for Israel

Yea, my cousin no longer wears his hand me down star of david armband. Instead of emphathy shown his way, it's more like rocks now cheesy

Nice their emphasis, once going over the paperwork for sure, was FDA and customs issues.

The all Hebrew menu is a bit much. Is it membership for the chosen ones only 😁

The Israeli government with their surrender to the ultra Zionists and the murderous settlers, and the extremists have subscribed to genocidal policy, and have made Israeli people targets all over the world now. Israel is a pariah state and Israelis are pariah citizens.

Unfortunately some of that animosity is also being directed towards Jews who have no affiliation with Israel nor any sympathy for Israel, but it is fairly typical of a lot of people too lump certain groups together. It is very important to distinguish between Israeli citizens and Jews in general, and to understand that 52% of the Jewish population around the world is not Israeli, and many of those non Israeli Jews disagree with Israeli policy.

So it's not about being Jewish, it's about being an Israeli Jew.

Hm, .. And most of those 52% of the Jewish population around the world have double nationality. They can always fall back on the other nationality.

Absolutely ridiculous. The close friend of the former owner needs to be deported too! Blatant disrespect for Thailand's laws. Religious groups like Chabad who do not respect the laws of the land, and put themselves above everybody else, should be shown the door.

Not correct. Very few American Jews have Israeli nationality.

I face palmed when I read the "Hebrew only" bit in the article.

Not making concessions to ones host countries/populations language is a great way to identify ones minority group as "other".

The more "other" one identifies oneself the more boxes are ticked in the mind of the host population, and the more likely a minority group is likely to find itself resented.

Being a different colour is a very basic "other".

A person can't do much about that, but all the identifiers that ethnic groups choose to display (which is what we are talking about in this instance) are self imposed.

Any mInority, in any population, is liable to persecution purely because "They are not the same as Us".

A minority "Them" group in one place may be the majority "Us" group in another place.......where it may very well practice its own persecution of whoever qualifies as "Them" and has ticked enough boxes.

If the boxes did not exist in the minds of "Us", and "They" did not tick them, the game would be over........to all our benefit.

A quick search says about 2 percent of Israelis are also US citizens.

That includes Americans who became Israeli and vice versa.

More than very few but its a common false myth that its much higher.
