Rubio throws Iran delegation out of the country as talks collapse

Iran's foreign minister ordered out of America after diplomatic efforts hit the wall

THAT'S ENOUGH — GO HOME

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his delegation to leave the United States after talks aimed at ending the conflict and resolving the Strait of Hormuz crisis stalled.

According to a US official cited by Axios, Rubio decided the Iranians had “overstayed their welcome” after the UN General Assembly had finished and negotiations showed no sign of producing a breakthrough.

The Iranian delegation left New York early Tuesday.

TALKS HIT A BRICK WALL

The extraordinary diplomatic rebuke came after weekend discussions involving Qatari mediators failed to produce the progress Washington had hoped for.

Axios reports that the White House initially believed there might be movement in the talks on Monday, but by later that day it had become clear that negotiations were at a stalemate.

The talks were focused on several of the biggest issues in the conflict, including the Strait of Hormuz, ending the war and Iran's nuclear programme.

IRAN SAYS — NOT SO FAST

Tehran disputes the American description of what happened.

Iran's delegation said its departure had already been scheduled and that the timetable had been communicated to the US State Department on September 17.

It accused Washington of promoting what it called baseless reports after the talks failed to produce an agreement.

So there are now two sharply different versions: Washington portrays Rubio's order as a response to stalled negotiations, while Tehran says the delegation simply left according to its existing schedule.

THE DIPLOMATIC TEMPERATURE RISES

The timing is significant.

Araghchi had remained in New York after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian departed following his UN address, reportedly because the foreign minister was involved in continuing indirect negotiations.

Those talks have now produced no breakthrough, while Qatari mediators are continuing efforts to find a compromise proposal.

AND THEN RUBIO SAID: ENOUGH

For all the diplomatic language surrounding the negotiations, the message from Washington was unusually blunt.

The US administration had given the Iranian delegation permission to attend the UN gathering despite the ongoing conflict and the deep hostility between Washington and Tehran.

Now Rubio has effectively told the Iranian negotiating team that the diplomatic window in New York is closed.

The talks may not be officially dead — but the extraordinary decision to send Iran's delegation packing shows just how badly they have stalled.

AN Original
