A 30-year-old Lao national has been arrested at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge 2 border crossing in Mukdahan after customs officers allegedly found 9.65 kilograms of Happy Water concealed in packets of supplements and coffee.
The seizure, valued at about 250,000 baht, involved 119 sachets of the substance, which officials said contained Ecstasy and is classified as a Category 1 narcotic in Thailand.
The arrest was announced on 1 October by Mukdahan Customs, working with immigration police, border patrol officers, drug-suppression units, the Food and Drug Administration checkpoint and animal quarantine officials.
Packages found on international bus
Officers were inspecting the belongings of passengers arriving on an international bus route through the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, which links Mukdahan with Savannakhet in Laos.
They found two parcels and identified the owner as Sadthusai Chaleunphon, also known as Sam, a Lao national from Kaysone Phomvihane district in Savannakhet province.
The parcels contained packets labelled as food supplements and coffee. Customs officers said the packaging appeared suspicious and, after opening it, they found Happy Water mixed with Ecstasy.
Happy Water is a name used for an illicit powdered drug mixture. Thai authorities said the material in this case was a Category 1 narcotic.
Case sent to Mukdahan police
The man was taken into custody and charged with importing a Category 1 narcotic into Thailand without permission, under the Narcotics Code 2021 and the Customs Act 2017.
He and the seized drugs were handed to investigators at Mukdahan City Police Station for further legal proceedings.
