Tourist Police in Pattaya have arrested a 36-year-old Ugandan woman after a US tourist reported money missing from the safe in his South Pattaya hotel room.
Florence Namusisi, who holds a Ugandan passport, was detained at about 11am on 14 August. Police said she was found outside a fast-food restaurant in the Walking Street area after officers traced her following the complaint.
The arrest was made by officers from Tourist Police Station 4, Division 2, Tourist Police Bureau 1, under the direction of Pol Col Milin Phianchang, Lt Col Phitchaya Khiaopluang and Lt Col Prapada Suksunthari.
Police allege safe code was watched
According to Tourist Police, the American visitor had taken Namusisi to his hotel room in South Pattaya. Officers said the visitor opened the room safe while she was present and that she allegedly watched the access code.
Police said that when the visitor was distracted, Namusisi allegedly opened the safe and took several items before leaving the hotel and heading towards Walking Street. Police did not identify the hotel or the American tourist.
Cash found during search, police say
Police carried out a search of Namusisi after she was located, police said. Officers reported finding items concealed in a wig, bra and the front of her underwear.
The reported evidence included 12 US$100 notes and six US$2 notes. Police put the combined value at approximately 40,000 baht.
Namusisi was informed of a theft charge and of her legal rights before being taken for further legal proceedings.
For foreign visitors and residents, the case is a reminder that hotel safe codes should be entered out of sight of anyone else in the room. Travellers who believe property has been stolen should notify hotel management promptly and contact police, preserving any relevant details such as the room number, time of the suspected theft and a list of missing items.
