Pheu Thai Leaders Say Thaksin Exits Party Politics

Pheu Thai Party leaders have confirmed that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has washed his hands of party politics and will not return to dominate internal party management following his royal pardon, which completed his legal obligations related to a prison sentence after probation was ended early on June 3. The clarification comes amid renewed speculation over his political role in Thailand following his release from legal constraints.

The comments were made on Thursday, June 4, 2026, by senior Pheu Thai figures who stressed that Thaksin’s status should not be linked to government operations. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, said Cabinet work and party administration must be treated separately.

He said the Cabinet already has full authority to govern the country, while party affairs must proceed under Pheu Thai’s formal structure. He also noted the party has an advisory mechanism and that Paetongtarn Shinawatra is already serving as an adviser within its framework.

Background speculation intensified after Thaksin formally completed legal obligations tied to his prison sentence when a royal pardon ended his probation early on June 3. Questions had circulated over whether he would reassert influence within Pheu Thai after his release. Party leaders moved to address these concerns directly during Thursday’s statements, emphasising internal restructuring and established procedures.

Julapun Amornvivat, Labour Minister and Pheu Thai leader, was more direct in rejecting claims of renewed influence. He said Thaksin would not return to party affairs and urged media not to continue raising the issue.

Julapun said the party was pleased for Thaksin’s family following the pardon but insisted political control remained internal. “There is no external domination of any kind,” Julapun said. He added that Pheu Thai would continue under its own ideology and political thinking rooted in the Thai Rak Thai era.

Yodchanan also dismissed speculation that he could take a higher leadership role within the party, saying there were no such changes planned. He stressed that government administration follows formal state procedures, while party organisation must operate through established mechanisms.

The Nation reported that party leaders indicated that Pheu Thai will continue to operate under its formal structure and advisory system while maintaining its political direction. The leadership emphasised continuity of principles and separation between government responsibilities and party management as it moves forward following Thaksin’s legal resolution.

Thaksin has "washed his hands" of politics so many times in the past that it sounds like a familiar refrain every time he returns from exile of gets out of the nick.

These lackeys will say whatever they're told.

Thaksin has always been the heart and soul of Pheu Thai - even if he keeps a low profile, he will be the one calling the shots.

Thaksin heads back to Dubai as his political era fades

Thailand’s former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is preparing to return to Dubai, the city that sheltered him during 15 years of self-imposed exile, after a royal pardon erased the remainder of his prison sentence.

The move closes a dramatic chapter in one of Southeast Asia’s most turbulent political sagas. But it also highlights a stark reality: the man who once dominated Thai politics is returning to Dubai with far less influence than he wielded before.

Royal Pardon Clears the Way

The pardon, granted by King Maha Vajiralongkorn as part of a clemency programme marking Queen Suthida’s birthday, removed the final legal restrictions on Thaksin’s freedom.

The 76-year-old is expected to leave Thailand once authorities complete the paperwork ending his sentence and remove the electronic monitoring device he has worn since being released on parole. The trip will be his first overseas journey without legal constraints since his return to Thailand in 2023.

From Exile Kingmaker to Political Bystander

Dubai served as Thaksin’s headquarters after he fled Thailand in 2008 following his ouster in a military coup and subsequent corruption convictions.

Even from abroad, he remained a towering force in Thai politics, helping allied parties win election after election. Yet the landscape has shifted dramatically. His political machine, once seemingly unstoppable, has suffered major setbacks, while rivals have consolidated power.

A New Order Takes Hold

Thailand is now dominated by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the conservative Bhumjaithai Party, which emerged strongly from February’s election.

Meanwhile, Thaksin’s Pheu Thai Party has been reduced to a junior coalition partner after recording its weakest performance in decades. The decline has raised questions about whether the Shinawatra political brand can continue to shape the country’s future.

Unfinished Battles Remain

Despite his freedom, Thaksin’s legal and political challenges are far from over.

Prosecutors are still appealing his acquittal in a royal defamation case, while Pheu Thai faces growing pressure to cultivate a new generation of leaders. Analysts believe Thaksin will continue to exert influence behind the scenes, but the era in which he dictated Thailand’s political direction appears to be drawing to a close.

For a man who once stood at the centre of Thai power, Dubai now looks less like a command post and more like a retreat.

It's about time this guy made a permanent exit from the stage, he's no longer respected by most, and he's disliked by many, after selling out to the toxic army in exchange for his return, he lost the affection of most Thais.

We all know this is a bunch of BS. He will work behind the scenes as he has for years. Hopefully he learned from his last pardon to stay out of the public’s eyes.

Well, excepting multiple military coups and actions leading to protection of national security triggered by just about anything.

Thai politics... a stinking swamp just like the USA, and many other countries to one extent or another.

The root cause is a conspicuous lack of decent, honest people who have the cojones to stand up and fight it out.

Isn't that what he said the last time? Just going to spend time with the grandkids! The man is a liar, like all politicians.

Ah-huh. Sure he has. Now Tony is just going to stay at home and enjoy playing with his grandchildren. 'Eh? 😎 Bottom line: I'll believe it when I see it.

The guy is 76 years old. I do believe he's tossing the towel. I know how I feel at 70.

Shame he had to try and cheat his way out of the repatriation deal by hiding in hospital for most of his sentence. Kudos to the authorities for banging him up again. If he'd stuck to the deal, he could have transitioned easily into the role of elder statesman and become well popular again.

As it stands now though: it's all over. Only the grandkids left and anyway, what's wrong with that? Write a memoir while they're at school.

Actually, Thaksin is a very intelligent man and the reason he is a billionaire. Anutin on the hand is corrupt to the core as well as his Blue Party. I hope Thaksin will enjoy his time in Dubai and help to expose the corruption of the Blue Party from there.

There could be some deal we are unaware of, he's got his freedom, now stay out of politics, even better, stay out of the country.

One day there could be a great film about Thaksin and the main players of the last thirty years.
