Rising Fuel Costs Prompt 10–15% Fare Increase by Thai Airways

Thai Airways has raised ticket prices by about 10 to 15% to address soaring fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Despite the hikes, the airline continues stable operations and is advancing expansion plans.

Get today's headlines by email subscribe-orange.png

Recently, Cherdchome Therdsteerasukdi, the airline's Chief Financial and Accounting Officer, confirmed ticket price adjustments correlating with increased oil prices. Although a fuel surcharge is in place, the ceiling is determined with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and may be adjusted if necessary. Despite these challenges, demand remains robust, with advanced bookings for March 2026 showing strong trends, especially on direct Europe–Thailand routes.

The airline noted that seats have been challenging to secure due to high demand, as travelers seek to avoid connections through Middle East hubs. To ensure safety, Thai Airways has rerouted flights around conflict zones, such as Iranian airspace, resulting in minimal operational impact.

Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri stated that the fare rises on specific routes are proportional to the nearly 100% increase in jet fuel costs. He emphasized that these adjustments are necessary, not exploitative. Furthermore, Thai Airways plans to introduce new aircraft this year and expand routes, supporting business growth without acquiring new loans.

Director of Corporate Finance Rath Rauksamrauat announced fleet expansion from 80 to 102 aircraft by 2026, comprising 67 wide-body and 35 narrow-body jets. This includes 14 new Boeing 787-9 and 14 Airbus A321neo aircraft deliveries. The airline’s 2026 plans feature new routes to Amsterdam, Auckland, and several Chinese and Korean cities.

Looking forward, Thai Airways is focusing on its hub strategy to bring global passengers through Thailand, boosting regional connectivity. Although Middle East hub closures have spurred direct flight demand, the company is vigilant about adjusting strategies based on evolving trends. March bookings remain positive compared to last year.

Separately, Airports of Thailand (AOT) announced an increase in the passenger service charge for international departures slated for May. Despite concerns, AOT anticipates no decline in international arrivals, reported The Thaiger.

I can understand that jet fuel prices must be going up and correspondingly there will be a necessity for the cost of flight tickets to rise.

It’s a question of when those ticket price increases come into effect. Airlines do not buy fuel on a week to week basis. They enter into longer term contracts covering months ahead.

So the fuel being used now was almost certainly bought several months ago at lower prices, whilst fuel being bought now at high prices will be used a few months down the road.

So if not being exploitative, higher ticket prices will be implemented in a few months when the high cost jet fuel is actually being used.

Do I think that will happen? Not a chance. I think Airlines generally, not just Thai, will increase prices now.

Charging for fuel bought ages ago at a lower rate and if fuel prices suddenly drop again in next week or two you can bet they will take their time reducing flight prices while giving out some excuse.

I'm glad they touched on new aircraft as the other day I flew Thai internationally, on an A320 that was clearly 12-14 years old. Not to be a whinger but no entertainment screens on the back of seats. I read, so that did not matter but this particular plane should only be used domestically.

'are proportional to the nearly 100% increase in jet fuel costs' - a single journey for a marooned traveller was 300% more expensive last week!

What, Thai Airways has already Hedged 50% of its fuel and is exercising some Call options to gain from the cheaper fuel price they Locked in months ago.

I understand Airline Spot price buyers having to increae Fares but some Airlines have Hedged for the next 18 months to 24 months.

Yes, I understand they buy contracts throughout the year and Not just one contract.

Anyways, hopefully things will improve soon.

It doesn't work that way; budget airlines always move in to fill the void.

Not only them, Qatar had a spat with Airbus over peeling paint on some airplanes and cancelled many orders, forcing them to lease planes from other airlines that are inferior.

So now, you really have to check on what aircraft you are flying to Europe on, and this definitely affects the standards and seating arrangements in business class.

My last couple of jaunts have involved certain legs of the journey that were absolutely not the 5-star airline experience they claim to be.

This September I am flying again and looking at both Finnair and Malaysian Air for deals. Possibly even Etihad!

Saw it coming and purchased two MCO-BKK tickets already for 2026 and 2027.

A few days ago I booked a Thai Air flight to Europe as insurance in addition to the flight I had already booked via Dubai in June, and was pleasantly surprised by the low cost. Thought I had all bases covered, but I’m now wondering if there’s going to be enough aviation kerosene for any commercial flights by then.

Absolutely. It’s all interpretation… especially the kind that suits each side best!

Ethics and morals. Depends which side you think is right. Terrorist or freedom fighter? Pretty clear that some on here support Iran only because of an irrational hate for Trump. This is the problem the new left has. Hate Trump so war bad yet the theocratic dictators in Iran are the antitheses of what the new left stands for. Gay? Dead. Woman showing too much hair? Arrested or dead. Women's rights? No such thing. Protest against the regime? Bullet in the head, etc., etc. How can anyone who hasn't lost their grasp on reality think this is better than Trump trying to bring these nutters who want to kill everyone that doesn't conform to their ideology to their knees is beyond me. Rationality has been completely lost by some people.

Ridiculous comment. We live in a world of global information. I can say that poisonous dart frogs are beautiful but I've never seen one. Doesn't make my statement false. The surface of Mars is red. Never been there but it's red. Iranian women get arrested by the morality police for showing to much hair. I've never been to Iran but it's documented.

Travel firms in the UK are selling package holidays to countries caught in Middle East crossfire for as little as £100. Some airlines are even offering £15 flights to drum up enthusiasm. So what does Thai Airways do instead? That’s right, increase their airfares by 10-15%... genius!!

I totally agree but I believe that the main reason for hitting Iran was the threat of their advanced production of nuclear weapons that are / were being manufactured in well hidden , deep underground facilities . For that reason alone Trump should be thanked .

Sadly there are opinions that suggest that Trump is seeking to control the worlds oil reserves with Iran , Venezuela , Cuba and Greenland his targets which yield about 42% of the global oil reserves plus the oil that America itself has

Well done Rrump you have played a blinder you caused sevear damage to the WORLD economy.

The damage reflects poor financial management by the countries most damaged. Less than 30% of the world's oil and gas came from the middle east. Saudi Arabia is still exporting and produces 12% of the world's total energy. The net impact is a reduction of about 20% of the world's total energy supply. The rest of the world has increased production and released reserves, allowing them to reap windfall profits that offset the negative impact. Russia was sitting with massive reserves that it could not sell. Now it can and Putin is laughing. Canada's pipelines jumped from 80% use to near capacity, and the increased energy prices are a welcome boost. The EU and the UK are exposed. The UK was warned but its government dithered not wanting to increase reserves for political reasons. If some countries are in trouble because of a small disruption, and yes the amount of oil and gas is a small amount compared to the total, then those countries were in trouble long before this conflict.
