I don't really see how repealing a law that allowed Thais to carry a firearm would have made any difference in this case or the other mass killings.

This is what I got when I Googled;

"Penalties

  • Illegal Possession: Unlicensed possession or smuggling of firearms carries heavy criminal penalties, ranging from 1 to 20 years in prison depending on the severity and weapon type. Foreigners caught with firearms face immediate arrest and swift legal prosecution."

There was more but Thailand is reasonably good in my opinion when in comes to legal security. But when it comes to corruption and greed, laws would be meaningless, especially if there is a dollar to be made!

"Guns are legal,...". Is that correct?

The cause of the incident and the suspected motive had not been established.

Huh? The cause is likely somebody who was completely insane, harbored an intense amount of hatred in his heart, and had no idea how to look within for the source of the problem.

He has now torn apart multiple families who will likely never be the same again. I guess for those of us that are sane it's hard to have any understanding of why somebody would want to inflict this level of pain on many families, the community and the nation.

This is a horrific tragedy and let us hope that Thailand does not descend into the kind of chaos and mayhem that we see in America (#1 yes, in annual mass murders) with regard to mass shootings.

Thailand's had them since 1940 at the least. It's not a spreading disease but the same thing every time. Unchecked or ignored mental illness, bullying, abuse and neglect of the shooters.

What is the point of this speculation. Nobody knows anything now other than 7 are tragically dead, and many wounded including at least one critically. No reason at all for speculation at a time like this.

BS. My teachers in my time were also strict, even very strict. Nevertheless, no one thought about killing teachers or students.

In the many similar cases in the USA, were the teachers also strict?

Guns were designed to kill people and are generally non-essential in modern society.

Logically, if people are being shot, the simplest and most direct solution is to reduce the number of guns in circulation. This approach has proven effective in many countries.

In the U.S., firearms are the leading cause of death among children and young people ages 1–19.

Suicides are also a major part of the problem. Many suicide attempts are one-off, impulsive acts, and reducing access to highly lethal means like guns saves lives.

It’s not just who has guns — it’s how many guns there are.
More guns — more deaths.

Guns are essential for many reasons. Hunting is a major one, to keep the animal populations, certain ones, in the carrying capacity of the land they live on. This is even more important now than before because man has raped the earth and decimated much of their land.

Secondly, countries fight each other and it's the way to protect the innocents.

Thirdly, target shooting is a fun pastime for thousands, and a sport for some.

Yes, they can kill people, but it's not the guns doing the killing but the people. Innocents are killed by those who are mentally ill, and most of this starts at home, so it's on the parents lack of teaching, abuse, neglect or people getting bullied like this one.

Suicides lead the way, and if there were no guns, they would choose another method. Getting a handle on depression is the problem there.

Gangs and domestic violence are most of the remainder of shootings.

It only takes one gun to kill many, and it's not the gun collectors who are killing innocent people but a disturbed individual that got their hands on a gun.

According to my girlfriend, the shooter was 14 years old and acted out of revenge because he was being bullied at school by other students. His parents are divorced, and he lived with his grandparents. He allegedly murdered them first before going off to commit the attack.

PM: Seven shot dead in Debsirin Nonthaburi school shooting

image.png

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says seven people were shot and killed and more than 30 injured in Friday's shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, with nine victims described as severely injured.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Anutin said the suspected gunman killed five teachers and of his grandparents before taking his own life. Police discovered the bodies of the grandparents only after searching the boy's home following the attack.

The prime minister said the shooter still had more than 30 bullets remaining when he turned the gun on himself.

Police examine possible motive

Anutin described the attack as well prepared, with clear steps and clear goals. However, the motive remains under investigation.

Police information from a close friend suggested the boy may have been suffering stress from studying, the prime minister said.

The firearm used in the attack was registered in the grandfather's name. It had also reportedly been shown in a post by the gunman on Instagram in April.

Investigators examining the student's computer found a YouTube viewing history containing videos about school shootings and mass shooters, as well as Roblox links relating to handling firearms. The material had been watched about a week before Friday's attack and is being examined as part of the inquiry.

Family describe a quiet child

Relatives said the boy was quiet and well mannered, and had been brought up by his grandparents after his parents separated.

His grandmother was a teacher and his grandfather a former bank manager. Family members said he rarely went out, had few friends and spent much of his time at home playing games.

They said the family was close and did not believe the tragedy resulted from problems at home. The case has renewed concerns over youth mental health, social isolation and access to weapons.

Blood donors urgently needed

Doctors at Phra Nangklao Hospital have appealed urgently for blood donations, particularly type A, as surgeons treat two students who were critically injured in the shooting.

Three students were admitted to the hospital. Two boys, aged 13 and 14, were said to be in critical condition and required emergency surgery to remove bullets lodged in their bodies.

I listed the reasons school shooting take place earlier. Strict teachers is never included in these but bullying, abuse, neglect are, mostly at home, but also through media. It's already listed that he was bullied at school.

The teachers possibly not doing anything about it could have lead to him shooting a few of them, along with his grandparents, who could also have contributed to the abuse, although it's said they were close, so it could just be the bullying he received at school. .

Many combinations that can happen in these matters, but strict teachers highly unlikely. He also has a history of researching school shootings, so that anger was coming from a while back.

No, strict teachers do not cause school shootings, as targeted school violence is a highly complex phenomenon driven by interconnected psychological, social, and systemic factors rather than the actions of a single educator....Key Factors in School Shootings

Comprehensive analyses of targeted violence, such as those by the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center, reveal that school shooters are motivated by a combination of severe, compounding issues:]

  • Severe Psychological Distress: Most perpetrators experience acute depression, severe anxiety, suicidal ideation, or personal crises long before opening fire.

  • History of Trauma and Bullying: A vast majority of shooters have experienced severe social marginalization, domestic trauma, or chronic bullying.

  • Access to Firearms: Easy, unmonitored access to lethal weapons is one of the most critical prerequisites for an active shooter incident.

  • Desire for Notoriety: Many modern perpetrators seek national attention, heavily studying past attacks and online communities to maximize media coverage.

Guns are legal, and just like the US, NOT everyone can get them legally
but it is not difficult to buy one
the applicant simply needs a million baht* in cash or assets
then there is a 3 month wait
(obvs they have an "express" option)

*There is no set amount, but basically you need to have something worth protecting
the more you show the better, under a million is unlikely, as my wife was told.

I was told its closes to 10 million and you need to be a large company owner and prove you need protection

I doubt Som with 1 million in the bank and a 2 bedroom house with a Toyota yaris and a couple of poodles would be able to get one 🤔

Why do people here have guns in the first place?

What do they use them for?

I have never seen a gun during my time in Thailand.

Very odd that people would buy guns with so very few places to shoot/fire the weapon.

They're all over the place. In my village I've seen at least 6 with them, and my girlfriend's dad and brother have them. As far as handguns, my ex's sister's son was caught with three illegally right after I moved here. Grandma always went to the police station to bring him home, and he eventually got busted for Yaba and spent 5 years in jail.

Once when I was living there while the house was being built, I was in the bedroom and he came running into it, saw me, then ran out the back door. A few seconds later, a cop came into the room, and then left and caught him around the block. All three guns he had were from friends, illegal.

According to Thai News he'd repeatedly reported the bullying to teachers, who did nothing.
The police think the grandparents tried to prevent him taking the gun, so he shot them.

But most people in Thailand, it would seem, have almost not place to use them.

Or, if this is a mistaken conclusion, then where do they use them in Thailand?

Anywhere there are rats and other animals. They'll shoot anything that moves. I hear shots occasionally when I'm outside my house.

Classic strawman. You’re arguing against something I didn’t say.
'Generally non-essential' does not mean 'no uses.'

The question is whether all of those uses justify the level of gun availability and the number of deaths that come with it.

There will never be a universal panacea for mental illness or violent crime in our lifetime.

'It’s not the guns doing the killing but the people.' I agree.

In the U.S., it's the people putting self-interest and an absolutist view of the 2nd Amendment ahead of reducing deaths who are the problem.

No, people do not simply 'choose another method.' The evidence shows otherwise. Studies consistently find that access to firearms is associated with a three- to five-fold higher risk of completed suicide. Guns are uniquely lethal, and other methods do not fully substitute because many suicidal crises are temporary and impulsive.

More guns mean more opportunities for deaths from suicide, accidents, and violence.
