Six charged over Makkasan train-bus crash that killed eight

Thai prosecutors have now filed charges against six people over the freight train collision with an air-conditioned route 206 bus near Makkasan Airport Rail Link station in Bangkok, which killed eight people and injured more than 30.

The crash occurred on 16 May 2026 at the railway crossing on Asok-Din Daeng Road in Makkasan subdistrict, Ratchathewi district. Freight train No. 2126 struck the bus at the crossing.

The Metropolitan Police investigation team, formed under order No. 117/2569, completed its case file and recommended prosecution. Prosecutors have since filed charges against all six suspects with the court, according to a report on 16 August 2026.

Train driver faces drug allegation

The train driver, identified as Sayomphon, has been charged with negligence causing death, serious injury and bodily injury. He is also charged with illegally using a category 1 narcotic, methamphetamine.

The crossing attendant, Uthen, faces charges of negligence causing death, serious injury and bodily injury.

The bus driver, Laphis, has been charged with negligent driving causing death, serious injury and bodily injury, as well as obstructing rail transport. The latter allegation falls under Section 140 of the Rail Transport Act 2025.

Vehicles on yellow box also linked to case

Three other suspects - two motorcycle riders and a pickup driver - were charged after allegedly stopping on the yellow cross-hatched box marking at the railway crossing, where vehicles are prohibited from waiting.

Methasit, a motorcycle rider, was charged with negligent driving causing bodily injury and obstructing rail transport. Saksi, the pickup driver, was charged with negligent driving causing serious injury and bodily injury, plus obstructing rail transport.

A second motorcycle rider, Aman, faces charges of negligent driving causing bodily injury and obstructing rail transport. The Department of Rail Transport had authorised its legal division director to make the complaint against the three drivers.

    Six people charged — including the train driver, bus driver and crossing attendant — but apparently even the drivers who stopped on the yellow box are being prosecuted.

    If the investigation proves they contributed to blocking the crossing, fair enough. But the real question is how a major railway crossing ended up in a situation where a freight train could hit a passenger bus in the first place.


    Eight people dead and 30+ injured. Hopefully the court gets past the blame game and identifies every failure that allowed this tragedy to happen, so it can’t simply happen again. 🙏

    And how about the officials that let the train go while in fact it was not allowed? And those who knew it is a problem crossing, and haven't done something about it for years? But they are probably friends or have money so the common people will pay while the rest will lean back..
