Thailand has extended the stay and work period for registered migrant workers from Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam until December 11, 2027, in a move intended to prevent labour shortages across key industries.
The Cabinet approved the measure on Tuesday, July 14. Capt Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn, deputy government spokeswoman, announced the details on Sunday, July 19, saying the extension would support the economy and help employers maintain their workforce.
The measure applies only to migrant workers already recorded in government systems. It is not a new registration programme for workers arriving from abroad.
Existing workers can remain in the system
Most affected workers' permits had been expected to expire gradually towards the end of 2026. Without an extension, businesses relying on them could have faced staffing problems in manufacturing, construction, agriculture and service industries.
Capt Patdarasm said the government acted ahead of the permit expiries so that companies could plan their staffing without having to stop production lines or temporarily close operations.
The policy is particularly relevant in industrial areas and major tourist provinces, where employers in hotels, restaurants, construction and related services can rely heavily on migrant labour.
Digital database checks planned
During the grace and extension period, government agencies will improve the migrant worker database and use digital technology to connect systems between agencies.
Officials say this will make it easier to check that workers remain legally registered, while helping to reduce illegal entry and illegal employment. The government also expects the measures to ease pressure on businesses linked to international labour standards.
The spokeswoman stressed that the Cabinet decision does not open general registration for new migrant workers. Only the existing group whose details are already held in the government's system will be eligible to continue working under the extended period.
Employers urged to await official guidance
The Ministry of Labour will issue detailed notifications and guidelines aimed at making paperwork quicker and more convenient for employers and workers.
Employers and business operators have been told to follow announcements through the Department of Employment website, www.doe.go.th, or call the Ministry of Labour hotline on 1506 and press 2.
Officials warned businesses to use official channels to avoid scams involving false claims or demands for benefits.
