Thailand floods hit 174,000 families, eight dead

Flooding has affected more than 174,000 families across 25 provinces and all 50 Bangkok districts, with eight deaths reported, Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) said on Sunday.

As of 6pm on 27 September, flooding had reached 128 districts, 587 subdistricts and 2,500 villages. DDPM recorded 174,803 affected families, or 545,022 people, in the 25 provinces and Bangkok.

DDPM Director-General Teerapat Khachamat said heavy to very heavy rain, combined with water flowing south from northern Thailand into the Central region, had caused the widespread flooding.

Bangkok and Samut Prakan among worst affected

Samut Prakan was the worst-hit area, with 124,678 families affected, according to the department. Bangkok followed with around 52,000 affected families, while floodwater was reported in every one of the capital's 50 districts.

Elsewhere, 13,971 families were affected in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, 8,716 in Sa Kaeo and 6,385 in Suphan Buri.

The affected provinces are Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lop Buri, Sing Buri, Chai Nat, Suphan Buri, Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Sa Kaeo, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Buri Ram, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima and Surin.

The eight deaths were recorded in four provinces: five in Sa Kaeo, two in Chanthaburi and one in Saraburi.

Rising water warning for central provinces

Water levels were continuing to rise in Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri and Sa Kaeo. Levels were falling in several other affected provinces, while remaining steady in some areas.

In Bangkok, water levels were reported as stable with flooding levels receding across most of the capital.

Relief work under way

DDPM said it had coordinated with local authorities and partner agencies to speed up drainage, assist vulnerable people, move belongings to higher ground and distribute essential supplies.

Provincial disaster prevention and mitigation offices have been ordered to assess damage and collect information on affected residents for assistance under relevant regulations.
