Thailand launches THIM app for foreign visitors

Thailand's Immigration Bureau has officially launched the THIM app, a digital platform intended to bring immigration and travel services for foreign nationals into one place.

The application, available since 1 August 2026 through the App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery, currently gives users access to the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) and travel promotions. It has recorded more than 600,000 downloads and over 580,000 users, or 97.2% of total downloads, according to the bureau.

Pol Lt Gen Panumas Boonyalug, commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, said rising visitor numbers were placing pressure on the capacity of airports and border checkpoints. The bureau, which operates under the Royal Thai Police, is using digital technology to simplify procedures while maintaining national security.

He said the goal was to make entering and staying in Thailand "more convenient, faster, safer, and more seamless" for foreign nationals.

More immigration services are planned

For now, the TDAC remains available through the Immigration Bureau's website, but THIM offers another way for travellers to complete and submit the digital arrival card before their journey.

This is the immediate practical benefit for tourists and short-term visitors: the app provides a single channel for the required arrival-card process alongside travel information and promotions.

For expats and longer-stay visitors, the more significant changes are still planned rather than available. The Immigration Bureau expects eventually to add queue bookings, certificates of stay, visa extensions, 90-day reporting and visa-on-arrival services at authorised immigration checkpoints.

If introduced as outlined, those functions could reduce the need to use separate online systems or attend an immigration office for some routine processes. Travellers should nevertheless continue to follow current Immigration Bureau requirements until individual THIM services are formally activated.

Identity checks and personal-data protection

The bureau said THIM has been designed with data accuracy and security as central features. It can read passport information and electronic passport chips through Near Field Communication (NFC), and uses liveness detection and facial comparison for identity verification and authentication.

Its stated safeguards include encryption while information is transmitted and stored, the separation of biometric details from other personal data, access controls and activity logging.

Personal information is protected under Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act BE 2562 (2019) and other applicable laws, the bureau said. The application uses Amazon Web Services through the AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region, with measures covering threat detection, monitoring, encryption and communications between systems.

Travel offers through Explore Thailand

THIM's Explore Thailand feature links users to participating businesses offering coupons and privileges, redeemable by QR code or promotion code under each company's terms and conditions.

Launch partners included The Mall Group, GrabTaxi (Thailand), Wipay, True Corporation, The Minor Food Group, Minor International and Bangkok Dusit Medical Services. The bureau plans to broaden the feature to include details of attractions, accommodation and activities.

    Used THIMM early yesterday morning .. and have next trip stored .seemed to work fine. I did like the offline qr code facility . I found the app a good step.....

    It would be very helpful and popular, if it’s download and use meant we didn’t have to attend in person for the first 90 day report when entered Thailand.

    THIM is supposed to be a government app for conducting official business, and adding random commercial promotions from private companies could potentially lead users to question its legitimacy. Dump the ads and keep it official, please 🙏

    What happened with the missing 2.8% of total downloads? Or how is that to be understood?

    Presumably 20,000 have downloaded it but not used it for a trip yet.

    I'll admit that I have many apps on my phone that I installed at some point, but never got around to using. But it's certainly a strange metric for them to bring up.

    Used it back in July for TDAC. Worked perfectly well. Have already put in details of next trip when returning from Singapore in October. The system will remind me to do the health check 72 hours before arrival to Suvarnabhumi. Then TDAC is completed.

    We'll have to wait and see... in Thailand, it usually takes a very long time for such innovations to actually work—and as long as every immigration office sets its own rules, that’s doubly true! I have my doubts!

    So just to be clear, for long-stay visitors, we don't need this (yet) as they are still working on that - and we can just continue on with DTAC and getting our IO stamped in person. Right?

    Yes. TDAC (https://tdac.immigration.go.th/arrival-card/#/home) is still working. THIM is more convenient in several ways, it allows a profile to be made and saved, and trips can be pre-entered longer than a few days ahead, just needing to be updated with the health question before arriving. But either way the entry process at immigration is exactly the same.

    You can do this by mail. This option can be found in various sources. I did it after returning from abroad. It took 6 weeks or so to receive a reply, but it worked.

    I used it back in August. It let me fill in all the details more than a week before my trip instead of 72 hours, reminded me at the 72 hour mark to do the health form and generally just worked.

    This is an important point since almost half of those 72 hours are used up just by travel time. Also Thai addresses are a bit confusing to me so it gave me time to research all the different parts.

    By "health form", do you mean answer the one question about your health? I'm unaware of any separate health form when applying for a TDAC.

    I'm assuming that I'll be arriving from UK not a country on any list of special requirements.. And you still had to answer this question within 72 hours of travel?

    I agree it's a bit confusing. I think the health form is only if you have the THIM App, but I could be wrong. I don't recall any Health Form..

    It's the same question for both TDAC and THIM.

    Shame though, I was hoping that using the THIM I could get it all out of the way a week ahead of travelling - might just carry on doing the TDAC as before - what the THIM offers isn't of much use to me but I can see that others might benefit if it all works as planned.

    You can get it all done with the exception of adding your answers to the 'health' question. Then it's a few seconds to update it.
