UK Couple’s ‘Holiday From Hell’ as Conflict Grounds Flights

A British couple stranded in Thailand say their dream holiday has turned into a “holiday from hell” after flight cancellations linked to the US–Israel conflict with Iran left them unable to return home. Laura Webster, 40, from Birmingham, said she and her husband have been told by their travel agent that there are no available flights to the UK for at least two weeks. The pair have young children in the UK who are currently being cared for by former partners.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The couple had planned to fly with Emirates to Dubai on Wednesday 5 March, for a three-night stay before taking a connecting flight to Birmingham. However, the flight was cancelled as airlines reduced operations in the region. Emirates told passengers it was operating “a reduced flight schedule until further notice” and said travellers transiting through Dubai would “only be accepted for travel if their connecting flight is operating”.

Webster said the couple are urgently trying to find an alternative way home. “We’ve got work, we’ve got kids. We want to get back ASAP. We don’t care if that means four flights,” she said. One option they found involved travelling via Japan, but tickets were priced at £10,000 each, which they said was unaffordable.

The disruption follows widespread airspace closures across the Middle East after the conflict began last weekend. As a result, the vast majority of flights to and from the region have been cancelled or significantly reduced. The situation made worse by images from Dubai showed thick black smoke billowing into the air above Jebel Ali port after debris from an intercepted Iranian missile struck the area.

The situation has also highlighted limits in passenger protections for some travellers. Passengers arriving in the UK on flights operated by airlines based outside the UK or European Union are not covered by UK consumer law. This means airlines are not required to rebook affected passengers on alternative carriers even if another route would get them home sooner.

Webster said their travel agent managed to arrange three additional nights of accommodation in Thailand, but after that they have had to make their own arrangements. She said their travel insurance would not cover the disruption because it is related to war.

“Unless you have a direct flight that’s already booked from Bangkok to London, you’re stuffed for two weeks at least,” she said. “It’s just horrible. It’s literally a holiday from hell.”

The BBC reported that as flight schedules remain reduced and regional airspace restrictions continue, stranded travellers face uncertainty about when normal routes will resume. Airlines have not indicated when full services through Middle Eastern hubs such as Dubai may be restored.

Not worth getting worried about

Thailand is a good place to relax and enjoy

I got home yesterday. It was a 35 hour flight with Air Astana, which was much better than expected, on fact more comfortable than many airlines in economy.

They have a stopover package at a very low price, which enabled me to see a bit of Almaty and meant two days flights, which I prefer

If you do proper research it's quite possible to find deals, but some less experienced travellers find it better to whinge to the press, There are literally thousands of people in the same situation.

No idea when I'll get the refund from Qatar but I'm in the UK and that is what matters

What date was your original flight with Qatar? I'm due to fly BKK-DOH-MAN on the 28th March so still in limbo at the moment.

I live in Thailand so it's not urgent that I get to the UK, I would like to get there as soon as possible but I don't want to lose the £2K I've already paid by booking alternative flights until they confirm I can get a refund.

Thank you Donnie, you made such a good deal for the airlines. You're an excellent deal maker!
And thank you for creating peace all over the world!
God bless you!

There are other airlines and flights on different routes and different connection points. Singapore Air, Malaysian Air, Cathay, even BA nonstop out of KL 2 or 3 times a week. Of course there are also Chinese routes. Will they take longer to get to the destination and cost more during the next few weeks? Of course. (BTW - who still uses 'travel agents'?)

And BA out of singapore. My german friend managed to rebook onto Finnair via helsinki for 1,000 euro.

Congratulations! An account from a person that "can and does" vs an account from a couple who "Can't and won't". As correctly pointed out there are literally thousands of people in the same situation. In this situation you should be street smart enough to know you can't rely on the nanny state or a third party ..... its survival of the fittest.

So this should highlight, some people shouldn't really be on holiday to begin with. They cant' even afford an alternate flight home.

Welcome to 'Economics 101'. Guessing many not only don't have an oops fund, but their holiday was financed by CC. And some wonder why they can't get ahead in life, living way beyond their means.

@WHansen Yep, 30 hours, that's why I haven't returned to USA, welcome to being a Yank, and how long it takes to get to SEA, along with the cost. And why most stay in the Americas for a holiday.

Took the non stop BKK - JFK flight once, ~18 hours on one plane, but it way better than conx flights to USA.

To be very honest, before leaving on a holiday, how can a normal human predict that some stupid idiot will start firing missiles due to which airlines get paralyzed? Most people will take a alternate flight under normal circumstances, when they miss a flight.

With the current situation, can anyone even predict that they could even start-up their car in the garage, in the next month or two?

Unfortunately, today psychopaths rule the world... and there is no one to object or end the circus!

IMHO

My thoughts as well- and being stranded in Thailand is hardly a bad place to be really

You always plan for an oops in life. Why you have savings, or lines of credit. That they are 'stuck' or 'can't afford' alternate route speaks volumes of their finances.

As I suggest, probably living beyond their means, and shouldn't even be on an international holiday.

Why most household are buried in debt, and will never see the light of day, and work till they keel over. Not living, simply existing for the man in the suit.

... " The percentage you're paying is too high-priced
While you're living beyond all your means
The man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams" ...

I read just yesterday Qatar said if your not staying in Doha, you can't fly in. No flights out of Doha to anywhere in Europe.

There haven’t been any flight through ME except some exceptions/ repatriation. But not for the average tourist. What you see on the internet are pipe dreams. Flights say they are leaving/ available up until the last minute. I was looking at these flights WITH the emirates office who were searching for seats. As the days to go on and more tourists arrive at Bangkok to go home, the worst it gets. They are still working on delays of the first 4 days of March.

Lots of available flights mean going to Singapore or KL or China. Some companies have doubled+ their prices. So it’s not so easy, and not everyone stuck is NOT on a shoe string, but have obligations at home, some are elderly, and hanging round Bangkok 2 weeks + isn’t fun either. Some have kids. So don’t bother insulting waiting passengers, go back to your bar stools,

I think you have a heart of stone when you say," They cant' even afford an alternate flight home....and their holiday was financed by CC". (Credit Card). How do you know about each case. Lets start of with key factors that varies from person to person:

  • I bet many had travel insurance and felt safe but then told by insurance companies we do not cover War.

  • They may have been given the trip from family members for such things as newly married etc etc

  • As one said he had to get a flight for 10,000 pounds per person That's not peanuts especiay if your say a backpacker.

I could go on but I think my reply has summed your character up to all in this chat room Sir and I use the word, " sir" loosely.

No travel insurance covers disruptions due to Acts of War. The best you'll get is a refund from the airline (but usually only after the airline has cancelled the flight). If you can't afford to pay for alternative flights whilst waiting for your refund, then you shouldn't be travelling.

Why are these two individuals, whining about being inconvenieced by a war, a featured story on the forum?

There are many thousands more in similar or much worse situations because of it.

It just seems to be another scam to get funds from others to help the lazy or incompetent.

Their kids are with their other parent and obviously not suffering without these two.

I think they should sack their travel agent and do some research. Both Qatar and British Airways are flying from the 13th.

I see so you showed them flights which go through or near the war zone, I think those flights will also be cancelled.

I wonder whey they are so cheap, erm cos no one wants to fly to that area.

JamesPhuket10 Gold Member

Sorry boss I can't come back to work yet as there are no flights, good one.😃

I know some people who bought a one way ticket on other airlines which have direct flights around the war zone, they are for this week.

They did have to pay 60k baht though but it is just a one off cost so should not be any bother as our lives are worth a lot more than that.

I know it is terrible, I was stuck in Phuket in 2020 during the covid period, I arrived in January, should have left in May but I was stuck here until the end of August, how terrible it was for me 😂

I realize that it is an inconvenience and they do have obligations back home but being stuck in Thailand for two extra weeks is not exactly what I would describe as hell. Perhaps a little bit of perspective might be a good thing here?

Easy for you to say probably because you loaded.

People save hard for a holiday, but average person can not afford a extra $8000 per person.

Mean statement, maybe the pedophile should chip in to help.

Just stop one day of missle launches would pay for the the stranded people to get home.

Stop moaning worse places to be stuck, daughter is airhostess stranded in Kuwait even if she could find a way out of the country, you need an exit stamp for employees to be able to leave the country which Kuwaiti airlines are refusing to do because they don't want to be left without staffing if suddenly open up again

What has that got to do with non staff?

. “We’ve got work, we’ve got kids. We want to get back ASAP. We don’t care if that means four flights,”. On one hand they are desperate and have to get home ASAP but on the other hand don’t want to pay for the expensive options. Make up your mind!

In a Taxi to Central Festival (Pattaya) this afternoon and as we passed Beach Road I mentioned to GF that we'd missed the Weekend Music Festival (We've been in Penang for 4 weeks, great place) and the Driver said that it was very quiet this weekend as "Many Foreigners not Travelling because of the War".

I don't know how right he is but did see a couple of YT videos & the festival did not seem as busy as other ones we've attended.

British Airways flights are Qatar. I guess people want to avoid travelling via the ME.
