Ukraine asks Thailand for winter aid as attacks continue

Ukraine has appealed to Thailand for further humanitarian help, including power generators and medical equipment, as it prepares for another winter under continued Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.

Viktor Semenov, Ukraine's Charge d'Affaires in Thailand, made the request during a briefing in Bangkok on 31 August. He thanked Thailand for its continuing support and said international cooperation would remain vital in the months ahead.

Thailand has provided humanitarian and energy-related assistance to Ukraine each year, Semenov said. He identified generators, other electricity equipment and machinery requested by Ukrainian hospitals as areas in which Thailand could offer further help.

Thailand's humanitarian assistance

Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the country has provided around 26 million baht in humanitarian aid to Ukraine. The funds have been channelled through the Thai Red Cross Society, Ukrainian Red Cross Society, Polish Red Cross Society and the United Nations Children's Fund.

Semenov said the earlier assistance had helped Ukrainians through one of their coldest winters in more than a decade. With attacks on heating and energy facilities intensifying, he said additional aid would be especially important before the coming winter.

The Ukrainian diplomat also welcomed Thailand's participation in international conferences on Ukraine's recovery. He urged Bangkok to join the Bring Kids Back initiative, which seeks the return of illegally deported Ukrainian children.

Appeal to the Thai public

Semenov used the briefing to make a direct appeal to people in Thailand, asking them to "believe in Ukraine, freedom and independence".

"We are protecting not only our territory. But we are protecting the principles and international law. We are protecting the UN Charter. For me, it's obvious that it's light and dark. And it's very easy to choose your own message," he said.

He added that expressions of support for international law from Thai people he had met had been an important encouragement for Ukraine.

Ukraine is also seeking greater Thai investment as it plans for post-war reconstruction.
