US envoy raises antisemitism concerns in Thailand

A senior US official has expressed concern about what he called rising antisemitic rhetoric in Thailand after recent protests in Bangkok and Phuket targeting Israeli visitors and Jewish activities.

Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun, the US special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, said the US State Department was maintaining close contact with Thai authorities to ensure protection for the Jewish community during the holiday season.

"I am deeply concerned by rising antisemitic rhetoric in Thailand," Kaploun wrote. "The State Department remains in close contact with Thai authorities to ensure that the Jewish community is protected during the holiday season."

Concerns follow Bangkok and Phuket protests

Kaploun's comments followed protests directed at Israeli visitors and Jewish activities in the two Thai destinations.

In Phuket, a demonstration took place near the Chabad House, a centre used by Jewish residents and travellers. A planned Rosh Hashanah gathering there was subsequently reportedly cancelled because of security concerns.

Holiday gathering cancelled in Phuket

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and forms part of a period of important religious observances. The cancellation of the planned gathering in Phuket highlights the immediate effect that security concerns can have on community events, even where no wider changes to travel or immigration rules have been announced.

Thailand is a major destination for Israeli tourists, as well as foreign residents and visitors from many backgrounds. Chabad houses in tourist areas can serve as places for worship, community events and practical support for Jewish travellers.

The State Department's contact with Thai authorities indicates that the issue is being monitored at diplomatic level following the recent protests.

Thailand has noted to international bodies like the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination that it lacks a single, specific statutory definition or standalone law targeting "hate speech".

The 2017 Constitution of Thailand prohibits discrimination and promotes human rights for all groups, though enforcement specifics regarding targeted international minority groups vary.

Online hate speech, inflammatory posting, or spreading discriminatory material online targeting individuals or groups can be prosecuted under Thailand's strict Computer Crime Act if it is deemed to cause public damage, panic, or violate national security/public order.

So you seriously want people to believe that Jews Out signs are not racist Jew hatred?

Dear Rabbi Yehuda,

Please feel free to come on the forum and explain the "This is Israeli territory" comment made in one of the Chabads.

Thanks.

That's stupid,

He has nothing to do with that and you demand he defend it.

So according to you all Jews are responsible for defending the actions and words of all other Jews.

Not even AI could handle that moronic demans.

How come I don't see Indian groups or Russian organizations accusing Thailand of full-blown racism targeting that just their one group and treating all other groups better? How come it's always the same group crying wolf?

I agree though.

Thailand should do something about the "Jews Out" signs.

They should go about things more intelligently.

So people like you and the anti-semitism lobby brigade can't take the moral high ground.

But that doesn't mean they should let anyone come into the country and act like they own the joint. If any group of people doesn't cross their T's and dot their I's, Thailand shouldn't let their toes be stepped on.

And Thailand should put out it's own PR to protect itself from being made to look like the bad guy. These people have been doing this for centuries and they've gotten quite good at the PR game.

They're bringing their bs to Thailand now.

Let's go, Thailand. You got this. Don't get bullied by anyone.

No it's not.

He's claiming anti-semitism without addressing any of the wrongdoing on the part of their citizens.

That is STUPID.

There is wrongdoing by all nationals.

But it is only Jews and Israelis now being scapegoated in Thailand.

Nope, people who step out of line get deported all the time.

This group has a large presence and buying up loads of land.

So if they do something wrong, it gets blown out of proportion.

And they are the only group making these claims against Thailand.

I have never seen India or Russia come out with one of their "religious leaders" accusing Thailand of being racist against their entire nation.

Don't play so stupid.

Was there a HINDUS OUT protest at the Indian embassy?

Calling for Jews out is actually Anti semitism and forcibly removing Jews from Thailand would actually be genocide and a crime against humnity

so perhaps they should be calling for Israeli supporters of the illegal settlements being kicked out

Local Thais, according to this article, are complaining about:

https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/politics/article/3367036/thais-take-streets-rare-protest-against-israel-not-promised-land

The protest follows months of complaints about illegal landholding, disrespect towards local culture and proliferation of religious houses

Stop being so ridiculous.

Thailand isn't Palestine.

Jews Out signs are racist Jew hatred by definition.

Israel is a pariah here in Thailand. It's about what Israel has done and is doing to Palestinians (and Lebanese etc). The overbearing presence of Israelis in parts of Thailand has caused a reaction which is exacerbated by the genocide.

There is no genocide. These exaggerations are why there can never be a rational discussion.

If we exclude religious houses from the discussion, illegal landholding and disregard for local culture occur among many nationalities. Why single out the Jews?

No, that is not the point I am making, the fact is antisemitism is not recognised as it is in the West, Thai's to my mind don't distinguish any difference between Jews and Israeli's, both, same same.

I know that is not what you want to hear but that's the way the cookie crumbles in Thailand, like it or lump it.

The US State Department sends a rabbi because Thai protesters dare to criticize Israel / protest criminal activities by citizens of Israel residing in Thailand.

Mind-boggling, but hardly surprising.

Thailand should ban Israelis from entering the country, Malaysia has done it already.

Stop lying.

It isn't about the fact that the protests have morphed into explicit racial Jew hatred and disruption of religious freedom. The US is not against prosecuting criminals of any nationality.

Facts are facts, you don't like reality, not my problem, you're going to have to realise the Israeli situation affects all Jews, trying to split the problem into sections that you like are closing down, no amount of Hasbara is going to change that. The sympathy vote is draining away across the world, and I will be honest with you, I'm loving it, despicable people deserve nothing less for what is happening in the Middle East.

Of course you're loving it.

Your hateful rhetoric about Jews has been consistently vile.

Yes understand there are many people in the world that are obnoxiously blaming all Jews in the world for the actions of the Isra4li government, Tell me something I don't know.

This is the problem, you try to reason with you and you still insist in playing silly games as you say, if they are supporting the actions in the the Middle East then yes those Israeli citizen are part of the problem, alongside their International supporters.

We know full well not all Israelis and non-Jewish support the actions of the Israel government, hopefully that will change things after the elections next month.

You need to get your head out of the sand, you are not doing Jews any favours by taking the attitude that you do, it's just not a good look.
