USS Abraham Lincoln arrival puts Pattaya on alert

Pattaya businesses and security agencies were ready on 2 September to receive US Navy personnel from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which docked at Laem Chabang earlier in the morning.

The first group of sailors was scheduled to arrive in Pattaya at 3.30pm, with many of the 5,000 personnel aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) expected to come ashore during the official visit to Thailand.

The Nimitz-class carrier berthed at Laem Chabang International Ro-Ro Terminal Co Ltd in Chonburi at about 9.30am, according to local reports. Thai and international media were following the vessel's arrival.

Security and transport preparations

Tourist Police and other security agencies deployed high-tech operational vehicles equipped with technology support systems at strategic locations around Pattaya. Officers were also assigned to major tourist sites.

Bus transport between Laem Chabang port and Pattaya was arranged for the visiting personnel, while agencies including the Port Authority of Thailand, Royal Thai Navy, security bodies and Chonburi provincial officials coordinated port traffic, land transport and security measures.

For foreign residents and visitors, the immediate effect is likely to be a visibly larger police and security presence in Pattaya's main tourist areas, along with heavier traffic on routes between Laem Chabang and the resort city as personnel are moved ashore.

Bars and restaurants open early

Pattaya's tourism businesses were preparing for the influx. Beer bars, restaurants and entertainment venues across the city opened from the morning, stocking up and readying their premises for the arrival of thousands of US sailors.

Hotels, food businesses, entertainment venues and other service providers were also watching the visit closely, expecting increased spending in the city.

Pattaya says it did not ban access to Soi 6

Pattaya City has clarified that restrictions on where US military personnel can go during shore leave were set by the US side, not by Pattaya authorities.

The city said Soi 6 and other areas remain open to residents, tourists and businesses as normal. The restrictions apply only to US personnel for security reasons.
