Yala FC footballer dies after lightning strike in Narathiwat

Footballer Sofwan Awa, a recent Yala FC signing and former Pattani FC player, has died after lightning struck during a match in Sungai Kolok district, Narathiwat.

The fatal incident happened on the evening of 4 August during the Golok FA Cup football competition. Sofwan suffered severe injuries and later died, while twelve others were also injured.

Yala FC supporters' page FC YALA FC Yala announced the death on 5 August, offering condolences to his family. Its post included the Islamic phrase: "Indeed, we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return."

Strike happened during match

Facebook user Abdul Basir Chepor said he witnessed the lightning strike while filming video at the football ground.

"Struck by lightning while playing football, right before my eyes. I happened to be filming video at the time," he wrote, adding that he had learned a footballer had died and offered condolences to the family.

Sofwan had previously played for Pattani FC. He had signed for Yala FC only days before the accident, according to the report.

Weather caution for players and spectators

The incident is a reminder of the risks posed by thunderstorms, particularly at open-air sports grounds. Lightning can strike some distance from the heaviest rain, so players, spectators and organisers should seek substantial shelter promptly when thunder is heard.

Open pitches, exposed areas and nearby metal structures can increase danger during storms. People at outdoor matches should follow venue safety instructions and avoid remaining on the field or under isolated trees when thunderstorms are approaching.
