Weather warnings persist but no expected impact from Typhoon Mawar

BANGKOK, 4th September 2017 (NNT) – While Typhoon Mawar is not expected to affect Thailand, the Meteorological Department and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) have both urged the public to be wary of changing weather conditions at this time, especially those living along the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok.

Communities outside Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River flood barriers are especially warned about weather related events at this time with rains expected to swell the waterway and allow it to burst its banks. The ten districts put on alert include those in Bang Sue, Dusit, Phra Nakhon and Khlong Toei.

In the area of Ang Thong province below the Chao Phraya Dam, the overflow of water has stabilized at 7.13 meters, leaving over 700 households under 50-80 centimeters of flood waters. The local DDPM office however, has warned those who have been contending with the situation for over a month that the inundation may worsen by another 10-20 centimeters this week.

Up north in the province of Nan, a weather warning has been issued for four districts with flood warnings for those living along the Nan River. Authorities have installed pumps to help alleviate the situation.

Despite landing in Hong Kong and being likely to move to Guangdong on mainland China, Typhoon Mawar is not expected to have any real effect on Thailand. Nonetheless, citizens are encouraged to be vigilant to sudden changes in the weather.
