CHONBURI: -- Police in Chonburi have denied that they offered money to a man wrongfully imprisoned over the rape of a Danish woman three years ago.

The man - Banleng - was jailed for the rape but later released when the real perpetrator was found.

He claimed on his release that cops offered him 20,000 not to pursue a case of wrongful arrest.

He said that he turned down the money preferring to work with a lawyer to seek justice in the matter.

Former head of the Huay Yai police Kamphon Leelapraporn said no such "scapegoat" money was offered to Banleng. As soon as the real rapist was discovered he was released immediately.

Banleng was convicted on the testimony of a witness and after CCTV seemed to indicate he was responsible. He had a prior conviction for murder for which he had served time.

Banleng is claiming money for loss of earnings due to the wrongful arrest but the police say him not being able to find a job was more to do with his murder conviction.

His murder conviction?

Not the most credible bunch of people, the BiB and a murderer to have before a Court.

Wrongful arrest. Wrongful imprisonment. Offered bribe not to pursue. Police making a statement claiming he was unable to find work because of a previous conviction.

Just so many things wrong here IMO regardless of who the person was or his history. Imagining myself in his position, I think I would be an angry, hungry young man as well.

I wonder how safe that conviction was too?

So do we believe the word of a convicted murderer or the Thai police?  How old is this young man?  He's been in jail 3 years for rape and how many years for murder?

After due consideration, I believe the killer.

Poor Danish girl , I guess she never have set another foot in Thailand after this.

police offering money??? this is the end of the world

Damn that reminds me of the poor girl in Krabi... her father made a music video.

Stories like these have to stop making the headlines. As for the guy who was charged... he did his time (how long?) so in my book he deserves to get compensated for neglect on the coppers part.

He was already a murder star.

One more rape case won't hurt.
