Just got back from Kuala Lumpar where on wednesday at the Thai Embassy I was issued with a Multiple entry Non'O' Visa on the basis of marriage to a Thai which cost 500 Ringgits, the paperwork that I handed over was the Marrige certificate though they only kept a copy of it, a photo copy of my wifes ID card a photo copy of her pasport and a photo copy of the blue book open on the page with her name inserted, all of these copies were countersigned in advance by my wife as I did not take her with me, they also wanted a photo copy of my pasport countersigned, I am not sure they required all of these documents except for the marrige certificate and ID card and photo copy of my pasport but if you have all of the above it will probably help avoid any queries, I put in the application at 10 a.m Weds and picked up my pasport plus Visa at 12.15 p.m Thurs.

Thanks. Believe that is the most recent report so should be of use to several current posters.

Question:

If that's how simple it is without proven income (to get the visa in an embassy instead of immigration), then why are so many people complaining that their families will be "torn apart"?

I don't mean to be insensitive to those families (i hope for the best for you), but I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on something???

Immigration don't issue Visas only extensions to your current one, where they require the proof of income, people complained as there is very little information except for sites like this and what applies in one country does not apply in all, or in the case of Malaysia does not even apply in Penang where I wanted to go and get my Visa but they don't issue Multiple entry Non 'O' Visas.

If you are English you can still obtain 1 year visas back in the UK without the need of a Thai wife, but maybe that has changed now, ask the question on trhis site and you might get the answer.

I believe most of the problem posters had a child but not a legal marriage and there is now no provision to extend your stay in that situation if under the age of 50. It may also be harder to obtain a multi entry visa in that case. But as with most problems they may work themselves out with time. And hopefully nobody with sincere intents will end up losing.

It's a good synthesis albeit a bit optimistic. (Well. Time will cure everything indeed...)

Since 01/10/2006 for unmarried parents of Thai nationals below 50 (it's me):

-no provision to extend your stay

-multi entry visa not issued in SE Asia anymore.

(I used to go to Penang, Malaysia. I will now have to go from Bangkok to Brussels to Zeebrugge to Hull in UK).

Just to answer junkofdavid2 question...

Family not yet "torn apart" (at least not permanently). For hong long will we have friendly consulates like Hull?

I've personally seen a one year multi non "O" issued in Hull in December 2006. They do exist and I have friends who have had them in previous years. No wife required, can be under 50 no problem. A statement along the lines of "I am taking a years break from UK and looking at the possibility of buying a small business at some time in the future" seems to have done the trick.

I think eventually that the penny will drop with Embassy staff that if you issue 3 monthly ones only, you are going to have 4 per year to process, ie massive increase in workload.

Mini-boom in Penang at the moment. Cannot be good for Thailand if we start enjoying our visa runs there and start extending them for a few days each time. The malays are also business men and they havn't missed it that there are lots of Thailand Expats turing up there now. Bit of commission for the Visa run companies to oil the wheels and your 1 night stoppover could soon become 2 - 3!!

If they sort out the nightlife a bit, they could make a killing as its a very interesting and diverse Island. Certainly more to see and do there than Phuket and Koh Samui. It's mainly the bar fly types that slag it off.

I honestly believe that once the dust settles, so long as you have the right paperwork, you will get one year visas.

Good news, actually. I also hear reports of only single Os at KL. Still a crapshoot, I suppose.

Anybody can tell what the Multi Non-O situation is in KL for parents (not spouses)??

Hmmm, so sounde like I can get a multi entry non imm o at KL. Hmmm, that is good news, but I am still concerned. Anyone else had any recent experience good or bad there?
