KORAT: -- A trailer truck plunged into a roadside ditch and became engulfed in fire in Nakhon Ratchasima province late on Saturday night. Its driver Chamnong Chanbanklong, 58, and his passenger fortunately survived the accident.

Kong Police Station deputy superintendent Pol Lt Colonel Apinan Pleummarang said the accident took place at about 10pm on the Mitrapab Road. He said by the time officials arrived at the scene, fire had already started and spread around the truck’s NGV tank as well as in the driver’s cab.

“Just as officers injected water into the truck, several explosions were heard,” he said.

Apinan said police had to cordon off the area for public safety during the operation to extinguish the fire.

Chamnong said he saw several vehicles applying their brakes suddenly in front of him because a pickup truck had just swerved into a roadside ditch.

“I applied my brakes too, but because the road was wet due to rain, my truck lost control, spun around and plunged into the ditch as well,” he said.

Chamnong said he then noticed that the gas had leaked and caught fire.

“My friend and I quickly opened the door and ran out of the vehicle,” he said.
