Graft complaint lodged in land use dispute

KHON KAEN: -- A NON-GOVERNMENT organisation has filed a petition with the National Anti-Corruption Commission against Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda and others who allegedly abused their authority by approving the use of a community forest area in Khon Kaen province by a private company for a commercial purpose.

 

Srisuwan Janya, secretary-general of the Association of Thai Constitution Protection Organisations, said Anupong, deputy interior minister Sutee Makboon and Land Department secretary-general Prateep Kirati-rekha, as well as other officials, should be investigated by the anti-graft body.

 

A former provincial governor and a local administrative organisation chief were also named among those responsible for the alleged wrongdoing.

 

 According to the petition, Anupong and other officials granted an unnamed energy drink company to utilise a land plot of 31 rai (5 hectares) inside the Northeastern province’s community forest areas.

 

 

It is alleged that the land was used for expansion of the firm’s factory and, as a result, it now benefits only the firm’s shareholders, not members of the community.

 

Srisuwan said the land plot belongs to a forest area that should be used for the benefit of local residents. He said there were still some trees on the land, and it was not a dry area as argued by the Land Department.

 

 

He said there are aerial photos to prove the actual condition of this land plot, so the Interior Ministry had no authority to give the private firm such a privilege.

 

 According to the ministry’s regulations, any use of community forest and other public land plots by the private sector is restricted to a maximum of 10 rai.

 

He said the Interior Ministry granted the private firm the right to use the land despite opposition from local residents.

 

Deputy premier Wisanu Kreungam declined to comment on the Interior decision. He said he had no information on the issue at this stage since the Interior Ministry had not conducted any prior consultation.

Just another case of, if you have money any government official will grant you whatever you want, for a financial consideration of course.

The details of who and where are in that other newspaper's website today.

Certainly odd since yesterdays reports on this clearly mentioned Red Bull and the pictures in the press also showed the signs that had been put up with the Red Bull logo on them.

their name was in the papers yesterday

Rather a different tone to the article in the BP. NGO is expanded to "environmentalist group" and also mentions public hearings where community input was positive, with the expectation of more employment.

.......in each case unless there is a proper reason to extend it. The reason for granting the permit, according to Watchdog.ACT is that the company owns the surrounding land and wants to expand its plant.

None. There is ONE Srisuwan mentioned in the OP, he is quoted as a critic of the military government, but I can find no reference to a military background. In your rush to criticise, it seems you may have the wrong man, not to mention that he is the one making the complaint.

Its perfectly understandable, and I am sure even Halloween understood it. He just jumped in trying to be clever again and came out looking a bit of a tit again. Instead of just backing down, he decided to dig.

Yes, that makes more sense - just a wrongly identified personal pronoun.

Even one of the "good guys" as he is helping with industrial development in the NE. there are a few other "details" missing from that in the BP article. The land is not part of the factory expansion, it is to be used for water storage required for increased production, and will remain the property of the local community with rent (not huge) being paid, B1,000/rai/year. Not sure how that measures up to local rents.
