Water situation still a cause for concern in many areas

KHON KAEN, 12 September 2017 (NNT) – Flooding has continued to impact areas of the nation with over 300 Rai of farmland in Khon Kaen inundated and Ang Thong province on high alert. 

Clean up efforts are underway in Ang Thong after Chao Phraya River waters subsided but many locals have held off on moving their belongings back home as the Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rains later this week, which may swell waterways once again. Over 700 households in three districts of the province are still contending with floodwaters. 

High waters have also been noted in Khon Kaen province with more being released from Ubol Ratana Dam. More than 300 rai of farmland spread across several districts have been hit with flooding and local administrators have been ordered to survey damages. 

In Surat Thani province, heavy rains have prompted close monitoring and warning systems to be put in place with the Meteorological Department cautioning several districts of the province to be careful when using roads at this time. 

Deputy Director-General of the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) Thongplew Kongchan said that from September 25 onward, the agency will begin using farmland to take on some 1.5 billion cubic meters of water but assured the process would not cause unwanted flooding. The waters are to be pushed to sea from September 30.
