TRAT: -- Thai social media had a new darling at the weekend - a near octogenarian grannie taking her primary school exams in Southern Thailand.

Khlong Faikhao from Koh Piya sub-district in Trang joined 1,300 students from all over the region at the term two exams for the non-formal education department.

The department teaches special classes often to those who did not finish their education for one reason or another.

Everyone present wanted their picture taken with Khlong who was doing primary school exams in Thai language and ASEAN studies.

Khlong told reporters that she only finished P4 (year 5 in the British system) when she was a child and this created problems in her life.

Now - just one year shy of her eightieth birthday - she intends to not only complete her primary schooling but in time go onto secondary as well.

Living on the popular diet of fish and boiled veg she said that she has no illnesses, is in possession of all her faculties and doesn't even need glasses to read.

"You are never too old to learn new things," she said. "And I have made new friends doing this course".

Her proud teacher Praphasri Paowan hailed her oldest student as a great example to all in Thailand showing that age is no barrier and learning never stops.

"In today's fast changing world education is more important than ever," said Kru Praphasri. "Khlong is a great example to all and shows what can be achieved for people who did not manage to complete their formal education as children".
