A two and a half year old boy must live the rest of his life with only half a right arm after an accident in Nakon Pathom.

While his mother's back was turned for a few moments Thanakorn put his hand in a mincer.

Mum Chalisa, 19, a Burmese worker at the property in Bang Len district who had been mincing dried chili - turned in horror as the boy's fingers were all detached and his hand was mangled in the machine.

Nothing could be done to reattach the fingers or hand and surgeons were obliged to amputate the little boys arm around the elbow.

Chalisa said she had no idea that her son had toddled into the area where she was working. She turned for a moment to grab some more chili to process then was alerted by the screams of her son who was covered in blood.

Very sad.

And very sorry for the mother. But you can't leave then unattended around machinery

Take the kid away from her she doesn't deserve to have kids ..

The level of ignorance and apathy in this country is frightening. The Thais just never seem to be able to see the big picture, ie what might happen if you leave a toddler in the vicinity of a mincer.

How about the fact that she is probably really poor and can't afford childcare and has to take her child to work?

And even the fact she was Burmese...

Poor little guy this is funked up..

Good lord!

I often find myself complaining about all the government regulations that drive up costs. But clearly, even I must admit that some of these safety standards have their place. A machine like this can be designed to prevent this tragedy from ever occurring. Difficult to justify saving a few baht when seeing this poor child's fate...  I now humbly swallow my misplaced rants.

Is that any excuse to leave a toddler unattended with access to dangerous machinery. If she worked on a building site or a foundry would the toddler just be left to his own devices? It's like riding a motorbike with a toddler (no helmet)and reading text messages or using the phone at the same time. It's just lunacy.

I had a teacher in middle school who had the very same thing happen to him as a child. His Father was a butcher and when he turned his back for an instant he put his hand in a grinder.

Those machines are unforgiving, I hope this little boy can overcome the challenges he will face in life.
