Roadside bomb kills four in Thailand's troubled south - security official

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A roadside bomb planted by suspected Muslim insurgents killed four army rangers and wounded six, including a civilian, in southern Thailand on Friday, a security official said.

A decades old-separatist insurgency in predominantly Buddhist Thailand's largely Muslim provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat has killed more than 6,500 people since 2004.

The bomb was planted under a road that was being built in Pattani, the security official said.

"The group that planted the bomb is using old techniques in order to create instability in the region. They planted the bomb under a road currently under construction," said Pramote Prom-in, a spokesman for security forces in the region.

Friday's blast followed roadside bombs last week that killed two soldiers and wounded more than 20 people in Yala.

There was no claim of responsibility for the blast, which is usually the case in Thailand's deep south, where insurgents are fighting for secession.

Thailand's three southernmost provinces were part of an independent Malay Muslim sultanate until they were annexed in 1909.

Four rangers killed in bomb attack in Pattani

By Thai PBS

Four rangers were killed and six others injured when southern militants detonated a powerful home-made bomb while they were on a patrol on Highway 41 in Sai Buri district of Pattani early on Friday (Sept 22).

Spokesman for the forward command of the Fourth Region Internal Security Operation Command (Isoc) Col Pramote Phrom-in said the bomb attack happened at 6.15am today on Highway 41 when a group of nine rangers from Ranger Task Force 44  was travelling in a pickup truck on a routine patrol at Ban Jorkuayae village in Tambon Sa-ing of Sai Buri district.

As they arrived at a road diversion where construction workers were repairing the road, a powerful bomb, which was believed to be hidden in a drainage pipe under the road, was detonated, killing instantly all four rangers sitting at the rear of the pickup.

Yet STILL the military does not provide armoured vehicles as troop transports.

The useless blimp could have bought at least 100 armoured vehicles.

I did a very simple Google search and came up with Wikipedia which has 72 pages of wheeled APCs and there are some strange looking ones there and some brilliant ones as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wheeled_armoured_personnel_carriers

Drop just one submarine and the government could but hundreds of APCs. The Chinese, Russians, even the UK, EU and USA would only be too happy to sell to Thailand.

If that were to happen many Thai soldiers and their families would sleep happily.

Looks like 34 Chinese armored troop carriers will start delivery 2017 through 2020.

Whether any of the carriers will be used in the South is another matter.
