I will be visiting Thailand from the US in December for 32 days; can I get an extension at the immigration office in Chiang Mai or do I have to apply here in the US to the embassy in Wash. DC; thanks for any help on this.

Better get a tourist visa before travelling.

You airline can refuse you to board if you not have a visa or flight out within 30 days.

There are lots of consulates were you can get a visa in the US

It would be best to get a Single Entry Tourist Visa in the US before you travel. That would give you permission to stay for 60 days.

If you travel without a visa and enter for a maximum of 30 days under the Tourist Visa Exempt Scheme you can apply for a 30 day extension at Chiang Mai immigration that will cost 1,900 baht.
