US/Thai model and paralympian with no legs makes tearful return to Korat hospital

There were tears of joy yesterday as a well-known US model and paralympian returned to the Thai hospital where she was abandoned 23 years ago.

Kanya Sesser, 23, was left as a three or four month old baby on the steps of Pak Chong Nana hospital in Nakorn Ratchasima in 1994.

Nurses named her after the month she was found - September or "kanyayon" in Thai.

The infant had no legs but soon became a well known and much loved part of the hospital. A lot of people dedicated their time to take care of her.

Now she has a great life in the US after she was adopted. Despite her disability she is a bikini model who inspires others. She is also planning to take part in a paraolympic competition in the US in 2018.

Once confined to a wheelchair Kanya is adept at using a skateboard and has competed in extreme sports competitions and races.

Yesterday there was barely a dry eye as Kanya returned; before she was helped down from the minivan Bunjan Chaikhweang, 62, rushed forward to hug her.

Bunjan - who Kanya called "Mae Jan" (mother) - has since retired but was formerly a nurse at the hospital who helped lead the care for the abandoned child she loves so much.

When Kanya was about five she was taken care of by an orphanage but two years later an American couple adopted her.

Now she is proving that whatever able bodied people can do - she can do better. She has been featured in many high profile magazines and attracted the interest of people throughout the world.

But she said yesterday that she will never forget her Thai roots and the kind doctors and nurses who cared for her when she was a baby and young child.

Yesterday she was given a tour of all the places in the hospital where she used to play as a child and where she called home.

A touching story, fair play to her, and best of luck for next year's competition.

Outstanding , very lucky girl .

but one wonders what her fate would have been had she not been adopted.?

Probably taken in and dumped on the streets with a begging bowl.

Very touching indeed.

What a horror it must have been for her parents after her birth. Probably they were in need themselves and did not  know how to care for her.  At least they did - even if only for three months. "Abandoning" her at the steps of the hospital might have been the best they could do for her. What if they come forward now?

Good to see that a person who seemed to have no chances in life succeeds  and has a meaningful and happy life

Kudos to the American couple that adopted her

But she wasn't but thanks for presenting the opportunity for a Thai bash...

If only it was intellectual curiosity that prompted the 'thinking out loud'.

How's that for an irrelevancy?

A heart warming story, nice to see there are still good people around.

The bikini photo is so bizarre and amazing at the same time. It is so awesome to see people who overcome their adversity, and others willing to step outside of the norm to make things like this possible. This world can be an incredible place. And for those wonderful medical professionals, who are rarely compensated adequately for their difficult work, this was a very nice gift.

There certainly are people who see a Thai bash even it probably isn't.

if it were me and i was lacking both legs i would not think highly about placing tattoos on other parts of my body. personal opinion

A very moving story which actually brought tears to my eyes - something that only happens once in a blue moon.

It just goes to show that with a little help and support, any human can achieve the unimaginable.

1Good luck to "Ms September" in all her endeavours in life.

On a more cynical note; I wonder how long it'll take her biological family to come crawling out of the woodwork now with their paws stretched out looking for a piece of her pie...

Video of her life in LA giving more background:

A sad third world thing.

Maybe her real parents that abandoned her will come forward when they read about her being rich and successful.

I'd never heard of her until she guest starred in an episode of Hawaii 5-O a couple of seasons back. It was my wife you said "She looks Thai" and after a quick Google search we knew her amazing story. Actually not a bad actress either, although paled into comparison to the awesome Grace Park (Kono in the show)...who was, and always will be the hottest Cylon in the Universe.

As for the Thai bashing. My wife had almost the exact same comment about 'when' the real parents would crawl out of the woodwork, now she's rich and famous!
