There are a lot of other somewhat related threads on this subject -- from places that make suits from scratch down to sewing ladies on the streets -- but not much attention on the middle ground of actual stores/shops that mainly do clothing alterations and repairs, won't try to sell you custom-made suits, and where you pretty much know where they'll be one month to the next.

I recently needed to have the waists taken in on two pairs of casual pants. So I gave one pair of pants to one shop, and the other pair to the other shop that I searched out and found, as a first time customer in both cases. And in both cases, the shops did good quality work, had the pants finished at the promised time, and no hassles about buying other things or trying to change the quoted price or anything. In both cases, it was 300b per pair of pants to take in the waist/seat.

Also, in both cases, the shops are set up such that you could changes clothes and try on clothes inside in some privacy to get the right fitting measurements/adjustments -- without having to pull down your pants and expose yourself on the sidewalks of Bangkok.

One shop is called Benjamas Tailor on the second floor of the Times Square Building, on Sukhumvit Road just outward from Soi 12 (the Koreatown neighborhood). The staff said they've been there for some years (extra points for stability) and seem like they're set up to do almost any kind of sewing, including things like sheets, drapes, etc. Both times I was there, there were a handful of Thai ladies working inside, and they were very pleasant and helpful, and spoke enough English too!

The other shop is called Bangkok Bazaar, and is located on main Suk Road just a few stores outbound from Suk Soi 8, right in a row of quite a few Indian tailor places. I saw an online advertisement for simple alterations work that went under a different name, but it turned out to be the Bangkok Bazaar suits place. The good news is, absolutely no pestering or even mention about buying anything else, and the guy there seemed fine to just accept simple alteration work, so that's what we did. In contrast, some of the other tailor shops in the area are fine to custom-make suits or other dress clothes, but simply aren't interesting/willing to do basic alterations to one's regular clothes.

Beyond those two places I've dealt with lately, there are a couple of others I've heard about from mentions here on TFV or elsewhere, but not yet ever done any business with.

--One are what I believe are called the Fix It shops in the basement of Central Chidlom and the Emporium malls, where their main business is alterations. But I don't have any idea about their prices.

--And the other supposedly are a couple of sewing shops right in the same complex as the Villa Market on Sukhumvit Soi 49, not far from Samitivej Hospital. Again, never dealt with them, have no idea about their prices, but I've seen others report that they can be "expensive" without going into any details.

I used to have a couple very reliable places, but they've disappeared over the years. One was a Thai lady who had a very ramshackle shop just inside Sukhumvit Soi 5, but she and her shop disappeared a year or so back when their building was going to be torn down, and she has never come back. There also used to be a sewing shop in the retail area of the Saladaeng BTS station, but that shop closed and supposedly relocated long ago, and I could never find where they supposedly went to. And then lastly, for the past year or so, there was a pretty good alterations service available from a purses and shoes shop on the LG level of the Exchange Tower at Asoke and Sukhumvit. The shop is still there, but they apparently lost their subcontract alterations person, so now don't provide that service anymore.

If anyone else has any good recommendations for actual shops that do reasonably priced alterations work for existing clothes or basic sewing work, please do post the details here. Thanks!

Had this oversed denim high boss shirt for like 7 years. My Mrs took a shine to it so was wearing it mostly but I found an alteration shop who altered the collars making them smaller and took the long sleeves up past elbow. It's a nice shirt jacket ideal for the evenings so I took it back and told she can only touch it when it's in the ironing pile

Yes, and when you have a pair of pants that need to be fitted (waist or hem, for example), how are you going to try on the pants for measurement and then take them off for leave with the streetside sewing lady?
