The government on Friday unveiled a phone number that people anywhere in the world can call if they are aware of Thai victims of human trafficking.

The number, +66 99 130 1300, can also be used for SMS messages.

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry and Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Office collaborated in setting up the call-for-help number.

Deputy Prime Prawit Wongsuwan on Friday witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between them at Government House.

Prawit said the aim was to ensure more timely rescues of Thai women lured into the sex trade overseas.

The number can be called for free from any corner in the world, he said, while Thakorn Tanthasit, secretary general of the NBTC Office, said SMS messages would entail a “low” fee and trigger a call-back from an official at the agency to find out more information.

Thakorn said voice calls would be automatically recorded along with the caller’s number and officials would be promptly alerted to return the call.

Maybe they should attack the situation of Thai nationals involved in human trafficking with the same gusto
