CHIANG MAI: -- Sanook reported that "thetsakit" officials in Chiang Mai had been attacked in recent days while trying to clear vendors off the sidewalk at a market.

One video showed a bucket and other things being thrown at the officers doing their job.

The traders were not happy when one group of officers tried to confiscate items after the traders refused to move.

In one incident a 40-50 year old man approached them on a motorbike. He hit officer Pheeraphon with a helmet.

The thetsakit officer was injured on the head, shoulder and arm.

The man was taken to Chang Pheuak police where he was charged with assault on an officer doing their duty and being insulting.

The incident happened at the Meuang Mai market in Meuang Samut Road.

Hopefully they (cops) come back en mass, with a bull dozer, and continue with the job.

A lot of these vendors are dangerously positioned, and show no regard for those needing to use sidewalks etc for their intended purpose.

yes they need to make a living, but squatting illegally (and claiming the right to do so), whilst endangering others, is not the way to go

ideally a notice to discontinue the activity, within a reasonable timeframe, should be issued, then let the axe drop.
