PHUKET:-- The torpedo discovered half-buried in the sand at Phuket’s Nai Yang Beach will remain there for at least one more day, Royal Thai Navy experts have confirmed after holding a meeting today (Oct 5) to discuss what to do with the ageing warhead, believed to be possibly 100 years old.

The torpedo was found on Tuesday by a local fisherman, who reported the discovery to officers stationed at Sirinath National Park.

“We have yet to determine exactly what type of torpedo it is and somehow find out if it is still active or not – if we don’t know, we might make a wrong move,” Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) Thanakrit Jamjit of the EOD team from the Navy base in Phang Nga told The Phuket News today.

weren't they prodding it with shovels before

If it is a torpedo.....these guys could be in real danger....a bit like knocking on heavens door having the RTN manage UXBs!

Charge the locals to rub the torpedo and look for lucky lottery numbers, the Navy has an assured income for years to come.

Hire some jet skis and drag it out, then parasail it towards.......................

now you taking the micky out of this honest people...right?

Standing on it is a nice touch . . .

If it goes off it will do 5 billion Bhat of improvements.

Or alternatively, nobody will notice the difference.

And we were all worried about these new subs sinking (by themselves...).

Plan 1Tying bouys to a torpedo so it floats when the tide comes in and it can go anywhere?

Looking forward to plan 2, A Giraffe with a block and tackle round its neck to hoist the torpedo out of the sand

They have the right amulets so all OK.

Can this be used to clean up the beach in Pattaya? It is a quick fix to a big problem involving people with small minds attempting to resolve the issue.

Ease  up  with   the cynicals.

Apart  from  attempting  to  destroy  it  explosively  from a  distance the   alternatives  are? If  it  is  as  old as  suggested  there is  likely  to  be  some interest  in preserving it  as  an antique.

I wonder what a 100 year old submarine looked like.

No Google is not my friend.  :sleepy:

If this device is 100 years old, why not make it into another tourist attraction?  Thais seem to do that with other things, even if they don't attract anybody. Strange that with a possible explosive situation there are so many people seemingly just hanging around doing nothing, apparently unaware of any possible danger if it explodes.
