Rising river level threatens Angthong business area

By The Nation

Officials are racing against time to reinforce two-metre-high flood levees along the Chao Phraya River that runs through the heart of Angthong’s Mueang district after the water level reached a crisis level on Tuesday morning.

According to Thanongsak Sriwichian, deputy mayor of Mueang Angthong Municipality, the water level in front of the provincial hall was 8.33 metres high, approaching the banks’ height of 9.32 metres.

Water had started seeping out of the flood embankments along the river bank, he said, and water was passing through the measure station in front of the provincial hall at the speed of 2,071 cubic metres per second.

Thanongsak said officials were reinforcing the embankments with sand bags and draining the seeped-in water in an attempt to prevent flooding in the government centre and business area in the heart the province.

The rising Chao Phraya had already flooded 1,297 houses in five Anthong provincial districts outside the flood embankments, officials said.

Just when we thought it was over, they start hoarding water in the dams above the 80% level and *BAM* here comes the rains. Back to water management 101 for the umpteenth time.

Sadly it would seem that the authorities do not learn from their errors. Something that seems to be common here in Thailand. the word planning in advance seems to be a concept not fully understood.
