PHUKET: Acting Deputy Chief of the Thai Tourist Police Maj Gen Surachet Hakpan landed in Phuket yesterday (Oct 11) to personally lead a press conference announcing arrests made in raids on tourism businesses on the island – but declined to name which businesses were raided or name any of the suspects arrested and charged.

Also present at the press conference, held at the Phuket Tourist Police headquarters in Phuket Town at 3pm, was Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Teerapol Thipjaroen and other high-ranking officers.

The brief details revealed that four suspects – identified only as a Cameroonian, an Indian, an Algerian and a Nigerian – were arrested for illegally staying in the country after their permit to stay had expired, and four suspects were arrested for entering the country illegally.

So, nothing at all to do with tourism businesses, and just 4 random foreigners picked up for overstay.  However, Surachet enjoyed a nice government-paid junket to Phuket.

Next time better to read the story before commenting. "Gen Surachet revealed that six suspects were arrested in raids on diving and tour boat operators" "However, it was revealed that two of the six were arrested for working illegally as tour guides and two others were arrested for not providing accident insurance for tourists"

Pretty tourist related. I know, since I was one of the many persons checked.

Nope, incorrect.  A true investigation of tourism-related businesses would have involved labor and the Revenue Department.  This chump was just jacking up foreigners who happened to work as tour guides and dive instructors for visa violations, all on the public's dime.  Total PR stunt.

They was mooching around Chalong Pier Wednesday morning, cops all over and a group of about 10 Immigration Police working their way up the road from Chalong circle to Pier where all the bars are then about 11.30 a large motorcade drove onto the pier to the end, several sedans and Tourist Police vehicles/SUVs, knew was some BiG Cheese - one of the Boat guys told me big boss come for check boat papers, Insurance and workers papers ok... Suppose it must have been linked with this?

Nonsense. Boat captains were checked, boars were stopped from going out due to lack of engineer. Insurance papers of boats were checked, etc.

Don't let a lack of knowledge stop you from posting.
