BREAKING: 7-Elevens nationwide to close on afternoon of Oct. 26

If you live in Thailand, you know that one thing is certain. 7-Eleven never closes. On Oct. 26, that will change.

All 10,000 branches of the ubiquitous convenience store will close on that Thursday afternoon in order to mourn the death of late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and observe the royal cremation, CP All announced this afternoon.

7-Eleven, which traditionally remains open 24/7 and never closes under any circumstance, will close their doors at 2:30pm on the 26th and reopen at midnight.

And rightly so.

such reverence.

Thanks for sharing this important info

Now I'm sure that from 02:30 pm to 00:00, people will surely manage to survive if the grocery joint in closed.

Perhaps they decided to close to let a largest scope possible of their employees, assist the royal funeral ?

Why not take it for what it is. CP and millions of others showing due respect for the saddest day in Thailand?.

because I dont think like you?

But I appreciate your suggestion and premise. I am already wearing black and listening to the lovely music on the BTS and in all malls etc. And will grieve the loss,  just as I did a year ago. and Sunday in the cinema watching the new anthem.

No doubt that the staff who would have been working this shift will not be getting paid during the closure.

Because that doesn't tie in with the ethos of certain Thaigeezers- everything is a conspiracy! :stoner:

Its not as if we didn't expect the citizens of a country to want to pay their respects on a day that means an awful lot to them.

Pretty sure which way your glass ends up!

I think you'll find that a year ago was the saddest day in Thailand. Know what you mean though.

Why close at 2:30?

Why not just close for the day?

Are they opening for half a day to benefit their customers or is there a limit to how much trade they're willing to sacrifice in paying respects?

If they were closing to let the largest scope possible of their employees to assist with the royal funeral then wouldn't giving employees the whole day off make more sense?

In the respect v revenue stakes, it appears 7-11 has decided to fence sit and take a 50/50 position which is really a lose/lose position (revenue is lost AND the sincerity of the respect becomes questionable).

Shut up shop for the entire day thereby giving all employees the opportunity to participate in what will be a once in a generation event for the nation.... revenue be damned.

Never close? I think the writer of the OP needs to think back to the coup when 7/11s closed for the curfew, with staff sleeping inside.

Or even better just don't close and carry on as normal.

Move along, nothing to see here.

Not sure whether this comment just makes no sense in this context or if the implication is that you think the events of the day have no significance in your "mind."

7-11 to close.......gosh can remember about 20 years ago sitting in on a Thai lesson on Idioms , we would throw one at the Teacher and she would come back with her Thai version...

.

Yer ...when pigs fly....... was ...Yer..when the 7-11 closes.

Did you know there about 250,000 people die on Earth each day.

The only surprise to me is, how long it took them to announce after Central shopping came out first.

Cremation ceremony starts at 17:30h (5:30 PM), actual cremation at 22:00h (10 PM).

Simply don't expect much service at all after sunset on October 26.

Tesco are doing the same. But whether they and 7-11 will pay their staff during the enforced time off is a very good question.......

Sounds a bit like an average day in Europe

Quite Right Too. If foreigners here dont get it they should not be here.

If 7/11 never closes why are there locks on the doors?

Just my luck that i will be landing at swampy on afternoon of the 26th. I wonder if i will be able to fly/bus on to my destination (and not get a snack!).

one of many who will do the same, pay they respects to the king everyone  should in thailand. a sad time of the mth for all of thailand

Never shop in 7/11 anyway

For the next curfew

But seriously: another frequent reason why they have to lock are power outages.

Without power they simply can't operate.

My sense is that CPAll management is well aware of the nuances and that they struggled to balance the needs of citizens/mourners being able to buy things like water, when most shops will be closed, with the necessary reverence.

I fully expect things here in Chiang Mai to come to a complete halt on this sad day and rightly so.  Farangs living here with half a brain in their heads should have made plans accordngly.  Have food, have alcohol if that is your poison, have other incidentials taken care of.  Spend the day watching a once in a lifetime event take place.  The T.V. coverage will be everywhere and I am sure that at least one station will have commentary in English to help us understand the ritual going on in front of our eyes.
