My sense is that CPAll management is well aware of the nuances and that they struggled to balance the needs of citizens/mourners being able to buy things like water, when most shops will be closed, with the necessary reverence.

How hard is it to put a sign on the door of each store "closed on Oct 26"?

You are naive if you think financial considerations haven't been taken into account with this decision.

It's too bad the subject matter is taboo; preventing any real discussion of the matters at hand.

Expect thousands of neo-helpless bangkokians to starve to death.

KFC will stay open though.

Thais gotta have deep fried greasy chicken!

What about Family Mart?

Quite Right Too. If foreigners here dont get it they should not be here.

But God forbid, they have an opinion by themselves!

Foreigners or anyone else, for that matter!

Not that hard, obviously.

Personally, I can handle a full days closure, but many less well-off Thais live day-to-day and rely on fresh, daily markets, 7/11's and ready-made street food. Many options for daily sustenance will be unavailable, giving some the option of a 7/11 to get something for a young child or an older person seems somehow "right" to me?

Being open for part of the day seems to me, to be more for the public good than profit per se? I am reasonably certain that this decision was fully discussed and vetted among CP's management, and the "authorities".

What a load of tosh.

What are you saying, if 7-11's don't open for a day, less well off Thais will die en mass?

Reeeeediculoussss!

Being open for 1/2 a day limits lost revenue.... that is all.

Never close? I think the writer of the OP needs to think back to the coup when 7/11s closed for the curfew, with staff sleeping inside.

They also closed in 2010 when bkk flooded, fearing looters.....

No doubt that the staff who would have been working this shift will not be getting paid during the closure.

A very good point.

And Tesco etc?

Would it have been better to let staff swap shifts and pay double time to those wanting to work?

Wonder if they'll still sell beer from 11am-2pm or if I'll need to get 2 days worth on the 25th.

You could not drink...

Or best bet is get two weeks' worth in on 22nd.
